I am just about to do my first all grain and I don't want to screw this up from the strike water onwards.

I am doing the AHB Platinum Bavarian Weizen.

5.5 lbs of German Pils
4 lbs Red Wheat

The recipe says that 150f for 60mins iis optimal.

Beersmith is giving me 11.875 quarts @ 162 for the temp.

I have the orange 10 gallon rubbermaid cooler.

Is 162 too low? I know to at least heat it up a bit over that b/c of man tun heating.

Anyone?

162 sounds right. Just make sure you check your grain temp, and mash tun temp. Also check and make sure you have your total water needs!!!

Great thx, wish me luck. SWMBO already left shaking her head all of the stuff I have laid around here. Got some Scorpions cranked and I am ready to do this!!!

If you have it adjust the strike temp for your equipment, you can count on it to get it right, or at least very close. I have the same cooler and have had good results trusting Beersmith. Be sure to take notes, though, as you may need to adjust the strike temp up or down a degree or two in the future. Beersmith will also help you calculate the temp and volume of another addition if you miss your target temp.

That agrees with Promash if the grain temperature is between 65F and 70F, and Promash has never steered me wrong on the strike temps.
