When designing g the recipe I notice I can check a box that says to adjust temp for equipment. Now I notice that this changes the strike water temp in the brew steps sheet. My question is when I leave this box unchecked it still calculates a strike temp but just is a lower temp so what is it calculating when the box is unchecked? Is it calculating for the grains and only the grains? And if you check the box it will calculate for the grains and also the heat loss absorbed into the tun?

Yes, unchecked factors only grain temp into the strike water temp calc and checked factors grain temp, tun temp, and tun material into the strike water temp calc.

If you are using infusion, such as with a cooler mash tun, and you pre-heat the tun, you can leave the box unchecked. If you don't pre-heat it, you should input the tun's starting temp in the first mash step and specify a plastic mash tun in your equipment profile.

Thanks for the clarification. Makes sense now why I was a few degrees shy on the target temp... Box unchecked and no preheated tun.
