Hey guys. New poster here.

I'm hoping someone can help me out as I'm looking to fill out my holiday/winter make your own six pack (well two to make a 12 pack). Now Holiday Porter from Sam Adams was my favorite for the season. Since it is no longer available can anyone recommend something that comes close? Appreciate any knowledge you all may have.

Sorry for the long post.

Porter is not a rea; popular style right now so not too many people will have recipes to share straight off the cuff. Do take a look at the recipe database as there are quite a few there. Not sure if they'd match to the Sam Adams holiday porter or not, but it would get you in the ball park.

Thanks appreciate it. I am sure at some point the hipster train will decide porters are cool. I mean its ripe for it since it's "uncool" as you say and hipsters are always looking for the next big thing lol. But till that happens I guess I'll have to take matters into my own hands.

You probably already checked this, but the Sam Adams site (like many breweries now) lists their ingredients in their beers, so if you were looking to make a similar brew you could browse the recipe lists for brews with similar grain bills.

I hadn't been to Sam's site before but they have a little button for similar beers, granted they are all Sam Beers, but it could give you other ideas when perusing the beer aisles.

Are you looking to brew something close or find a commercial beer that is similar?

Something commercial would be nice. I'm a novice homebrewer and while I have tried something similar to a holiday porter, I wouldn't mind buying something either.

I wish I could help, but I'm stuck in a country that sells only beers along the lines of Coors or Michelob. Thus my getting back into homebrewing after a 20 year hiatus.

But, I do still read beer lit, and I have in front of me a copy of Draft magazine's holiday issue and there are a bunch in there I'd like to try, like Denver Beer Co's Graham Cracker Porter.

I don't think I've had SA's Holiday Porter, so I can't compare. But holiday beer-wise, you can't go wrong with Anchor's Christmas beers. I just drank a 2013 (brought 4 with me to Kyrgyzstan) last night. Yummy coffee and dark chocolate. Almost like a lightly roasted chocolate soda.

And I see there are pumpkin porters out there (p88 in Draft). So so jealous...

Wish I could help but I'm down in Texas. Maybe try Seek A Brew for Pennsylvania and scout some of those breweries? Or maybe the trade section for some out of state stuff.

Find a good bottle shop in your area and ask for their advice, probably the best way to get something tasty from a knowledgeable person.
