OK bretheren. I love you all as brothers....and as such.....

IF ANY ONE OF YOU BREWED A BEER. THEN SAID THE NEXT TIME THAT YOU DOUBLED IT.......IT BETTER BE 10 GALLONS FROM A 5 GALLON RECIPE, OR......10 OZ OF HOPS WHEN THE ORIGINAL WAS 5, ETC....

ANY DEUCHE WHO SAYS HE "DOUBLED" HIS 5 GALLON RECIPE BY BREWING 7 GALLONS...

ARE YOU ALL SERIOUS???? SOME OF THIS IS SCIENCE!!!! DOUBLE CAN MEAN 75% MORE???????

COME ON!!!!!!!

It is not a matter of right and wrong. "Double your hops for this IPA" does not mean ADD ANY AMOUNT MORE YOU CHOOSE!!!!!

So how much does your life suck, seriously?? ;)

Nobody is taking double literally in here.

We're just saying you are wrong in thinking that the word double is in reference to the letter I. It's not, and you're wrong.

The OP is really worked up about the literal translation of things.

Try masturbation, it helps.

How do you know? I am not convinced. But thanks for the rational response.

Soooooo.... I guess I doubled my salary this year since I made 10% more.

In a process where measurements are important, I see no reason that double should go from precise to vague.

Why not a quadruple?

I can't believe I just wasted 5 minutes on this thread! My fault!
Banish this to debate... "Mikey likes it!" etc...

As has already been pointed out, there are other stronger versions of beer style that carry the double moniker. We all realize that this branding doesn't mean the beer has double any of the ingredients, or double the alcohol.

And if that's your pet peeve, that's cool. I think we're all just saying that double is an interchangeable adjective with Imperial -- both mean the same thing. The "D" does not mean "Double I".

Just because the BJCP guidelines say that double is an alternative....

I take it as "all pickles are cucumbers, but not all cucumbers are pickles."

Imperial could mean double (literally) or extra, or super or whatever.

I appreciate your tone.

I am not upset, or even passionate. I wanted a discussion of some intelligence.

Cheers brother, thanks for supplying that.

No. If you made 10% more, you probably doubled MY salary. And I think the double refers to the two I's...:D
Helluva thing for everyone to get their panties in a bunch over, though...

Panties in a bunch........

I support intelligent discussion as it is necessary to achieve any sort of changing, intelligent, evolving community.............

Panties optional.;)

Just because a bunch of people say "irregardless" doesn't make it a word.

Those of you who are pissed over this make me laugh!

hahahahahahahahahahahaha

dude.... thats EXACTLY what makes a word a word.

how do you think bling made it into the modern dictionary?!

my god... if anybody can start a massive fight thread its you cheesy. good job.

And I just cant understand dude how yyou are so twisted up over this thing. Have you ever really thought about the language your typing in when you post here and how completely stupid of a language it really is?

think about all the uses for a word like crack...

I cracked open a fresh beer
the door was open a crack
I just smoked a bunch of crack
I heard a cracking noise

Are you frustrated that this word can be used in so many different ways?

I could go to the bar, pub, tavern, alehouse, bistro, canteen, drinkery, cocktail lounge, taproom, watering hole, saloon or many more. You want to have another arguement about these interchangeable words? The language evolves and grows on its own. Leave it Alone!!

The language is stupid, and if you want to get into a huge debate about interchanging two words in English homebrew jargon then you might as well learn a different language. This is one of the stupidest arguements I've ever seen.

I consider Pliny The Elder the originator of the style and its inventor, Vinnie, calls it a Double IPA, so there ya go.

If crack were a quantifiable measurement, or a multiplication of a specific amount, that would suck.

So crack open some more crack and keep it coming with your wise cracks.:mug:

you obviously missed the point entirely, but i cant really say im surprised

No, you are saying that if a bunch of dip****s mispronounce a word, or make one up, or change the meaning, the rest of us with the ability to think should just accept it.

I support intelligent discussion as it is necessary to achieve any sort of changing, intelligent, evolving community.............

Hehehe that was a good one. I get your joke.

Let's recap this thread shall we:

OP- makes an assertion in rant form
forum- responds by pointing out that the OP is incorrect
OP- lashes out about how the forum response is dumb
forum- points to several specific references from industry websites and beer examples to prove that the response is correct and the OP's original position was incorrect
OP- rejects the proof and maintains his position that he is right and that Imperial makes more sense than double even though several citations and logic say otherwise
forum- points out that OP is a troll
OP- believes rational discussion is a great thing....

yep that was weird.

Again, Cheese, you fit the role of a beer snob to a "T"; under-informed and desperately attempting to seem superior despite a void of practical, pragmatic, or accurate information, all while making everyone think you are a d-bag.

Read my blog on beer snobs, it should illustrate how you are being perceived in this thread.

OK fellas! I give.

Gonna go brew a double ZIMA. I AM hungry, so a double lunch sounds good too.

My dog has gone from 45 lbs to 50, essentially making him a double.

I accept the evidence that some breweries use the term double to mean somewhat stronger.

There is little evidence to suggest that Double IPA refers to the double "I" in Imperial India Pale Ale.

The evidence presented does not prove that it isn't, any more than the extensive use of "irregardless" proves that it is a word.

go eat a double cheeseburger.

then b*tch when it doesn't come with 2 buns, double the lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, mayo, etc. make sure you pay double the price as well, and get double the napkins.

go buy some double bubble. then b*tch when you open up the wrapper and find one piece of gum.

Honestly, your intention was simply to get beer geek points, and you failed miserably. All this "i wanna have an intelligent conversation" is bs, you came out flaming with a useless rant on naming protocol. not with questions.

Dubbel and tripel have historic relevance here. They also do not literally mean Double and Triple anything.

Brewers also used X, XX, XXX and XXXX.

I think they have a Language forum somewhere. You could take it up over there.

And by forum, I do not literally mean a open public space in the middle of a Roman city.

And by "take it up over there", I mean, "make your point less abrasively."

:off:

I'm not taking sides, but I do have to take issue when it comes to the word
"irregardless". The word regardless already took care of what was trying to be expressed. "Irregardless" has an illogical negative prefix which probably came about from the the word 'irrespective'. The word "irregardless" is avoided by careful users of proper English.

It's like saying 'more better'. It makes no sense, and it has no place.

Now let's have a beer!
