Hello there,
First time Brewer here, I have picked up a Coopers English Bitter Kit and have set it all up on its primary fermentation! (Exciting stuff!)

I were wondering if its worth slipping in a sachet of Beer Fining (not originally included in the kit) and if so, when woulsd be the optimal time to use it, whilst its in its 6-7ish cycle of fermentation or afterwards?

Any advice would be perfect!

What type of beer finings is that sachet made of? Is it an Irish Moss product or a Gelatin product?

Irish Moss goes in the last 10 minutes of the boil. It helps coagulate hot break proteins.

Gelatin can be used at any time in the primary, but is probably most effective about 12-24 hours before you bottle, or applied directly to the keg if you keg. Gelatin also coagulates proteins, but does a better job at room/fridge temps, as opposed to Irish Moss/Whirlfloc at higher temps.

^That can't be real....

What is this 6-7ish cycle of fermentation that you speak of?

Most kits don't require fining agents as the base malts have already been mashed. The only reason to use them at all is to prevent chill haze, and that's merely aesthetic and doesn't affect the taste at all. If you do feel like you need some, get irish moss. It's cheaper than whirlfloc and works pretty much just as well. Add a teaspoon per five gallons at 10 left in the boil.

You know. The 6-7ish cycle of fermentation, when the dog star is in the house of Zuul. As opposed to the 8-12ish cycles when the reign of Gozer the Gozerian is nigh.

Don't you read the brewing books?

It's probably an Isinglass solution, similar to those used by winemakers.

Hmm, that conflicts a little bit with what I've heard about gelatin. I've read that gelatin works much better at colder temperatures, but even then, you should give it 2 or 3 days to settle everything out. I can't imagine gelatin could accomplish much clarifying if added at room temperature, and then only given 12-24 hours to do its work.

Oh dear, I clearly have shown my true nubiness there!
That, as you can hopefully imagine, was a typo, I meant the 6-7ish 'Day' of the fermentation cycle.

As for what it is, I'm rather sure (without having it in front of me right now) is as Kombat says, an Isinglass Solution, very much like the wine finings they also sell.

Bwahahahahahah!! :ban:

Moose, I believe you'll want to add the isinglass after fermentation is completely done, though I'm not 100% on that, I've only fined a fermenter with gelatin.
