I've been brewing beer a while now, and I have all the neccesary equiptment for that (6 gallon glass carboy, two 5 gallon plastic carboys including 1 w/ a spiggot, syphon hose, bottle capper, bottles) and now I'm wondering if it's possible to make soda with the same equiptment? Or would this be a bad idea? I'd like to try a root beer recipe if anything, but I'm not ready to invest in more stuff other then ingredients just to do this.

Anything plastic will be very difficult to de-rootbeer. On the other hand, you can mix your sodas in your kettle and bottle directly. That would only require a dedicated siphon.
