Guys,

Wondering if any builders out there can help. Here is the exterior of my house where I want to cut the hole for the the vent. Any thoughts on how to go about this? It's manufactured stone with mortar. The red dot is the approximate location for 6" hole.

Here is a pic of a loose piece of stone I need to repair just for reference.

My plan was to use a 6" hole saw, cut through inside truss then drill a pilot hole through the outside, go outside and cut back towards the inside. Hopefully it cuts the stone smoothly. I think the stone is manufactured stone - concrete shaped to look like stone. Most of the other posts I have seen is cutting through siding, which looks easier than my stone.

Thanks for any guidance.

You can cut through it pretty easily with a carbide hole saw. You will need one with a center bit.

Alternatively, mark a circle, then drill small holes inside the circle, and chip out the piece. Very easy to do this way, just be patient and don't rush it.

Whew, those carbide grit hole saws are expensive! Wanted to buy a bimetal one for drilling the hole in the wood truss I think I'll do the small holes and chip out the piece

Thanks again

If you have an angle grinder by a 4" diamond blade for it. You can make cuts like if you were cutting a pie but in very small slices. It will chip out easy.

Good Luck

this stuff chips pretty easily, i just had to do some to install an in-use receptacle cover on my garage. i didn't have much to chip and honestly just used a hammer and an old flat-head screw driver. i'm sure a real chisel or wonder bar or similar would go a lot faster.

You may want to check your local rental shop for a concret coring machine. Or the yellow pages under concrete coring and cutting. I bet it would be less the $50 and the hole will be laser beam perfect.
