I am just getting started and getting my kegging equipment together. I see alot of people always wanting ball locks. Is there a functional difference or people just want to stay with one type? I have found better pricing for pin locks, but wanted to know aside from the connectors if there was any difference.
Thanks

The pin locks that I have are shorter than the ball lock I use.

I suppose that would help out with clearance issues.

Aside from the connections and the lack of the release valve on the lid on my pin locks, I haven't seen much difference. I'm sure there are more subtle differences that I've neglected to mention.

Seem to be a better selection of used ball lock cornies running around, but that shouldn't be your deciding factor. Go to your LHBS and try using both posts and see which one suits you best. I got comfortable with ball locks, and my LHBS carries them most regularly. ;)

Ive used both and either will work just as fine.

Ball lock connection seems more confortable, more stable... my opinion.

Pin lock is a little bit shorter and wider. Id say like ~3 inches shorter.

Release valve works when you pull it. It will release pressure from the keg in case of over carbing, or if your trying to open it. Trying to open a pressured keg is extremely unwise.
Also if the keg reaches a certain PSI, the valve will come up on its own helping to prevent garage I.C.B.M.s. :)

thanks. figured i could just push the post in on the gas side to relieve pressure when needed.

As noted, pin locks are shorter and wider. That can make a difference in how many will fit in your kegerator--there are some out there like mine that can hold 4 ball locks but only 3 pin locks; presumably there are some short enough that they can hold pin locks but not ball locks.
