Bad taste from Silicone Hoses.

The homebrew supply "companies" that sell silicone tubing are so far from the manufacturers of the tubing that we have no idea what we are buying. I would not be surprised at all if some of the tubing that is sold by homebrew vendors is total garbage or stuff destined for the trash can.

Sorry. Total ********. I have literally watched my tubing being made from start to finish.

Went through this too. My first set of hoses (which were definitely silicone and bought from a trusted store that sold them as food grade) started smelling bad from the first pre-brew hot cleaning, a mix between solvent and burning plastic (I made sure there was no actual plastic burning :) ). After a few brews these hoses were replaced with ones from a different manufacturer, bought at the same store. These ones were made in Europe (so no chance of Chinese counterfeit) and certified food grade. Same smell although to a somewhat lesser extent.

Never knew about the curing aspect of this, will ask about it next time I order hoses!

Another point note is that not all peroxide tubing is equal. I have order silicone tubing that has been peroxide cured from a homebrew supplier and it has a faint odour. I have bought silicone tubing from a automative supplier and it stunk of bleach. Both claimed to be food grade. It all depends on how they are treated post curing.

I always buy platinum cured. I would never use peroxide cured on beer contact parts.

The reason the two different processes exist a part from coat is that peroxide cured silicon has a much greater mechanical strength.

In all other instances where mechanical strength is not an issue and chemical inertness is the platinum cured tubing should be used.

Can you get away with peroxide cured tubing when brewing. Yes if the post curing treatment is sufficient. Would I personally use peroxide tubing, no because the price difference isn't enough for me to risk a whole brew day to find out the post curing treatment isn't sufficient and I get an off flavor.

Care to help us out and let us know the two places you bought from?

Both from Brewpi in the NL. They were very open and honest and I got a discount on the 2nd set because of the smell issues. I wouldn't want to badmouth them; their service and products are great.

Because of having 2 young kids I rarely brew these days and when I brew I go for stovetop BIAB; this kind of solved my issues with smelly tubing, not using any :)
