Why would one want to measure the gravity directly in the mash tun? I never measure the wort gravity in the MT. Am I missing something?

The point is that you can pull a sample and measure it immediately without having to wait for it to cool down. Personally, I think a refractometer is easier and only uses a couple of drops of wort.

I got that part. My point was that about the only times I need a gravity reading are pre & post boil, other than the FG in the fermenter. At pre-boil, I've usually heated the runoff way above the 150* range by the time the sparge is complete, so I would need to use a corrections factor anyway. Post boil or near the end of the boil the wort will also be way above 150*. Maybe it would be useful to check the runoff gravity near the end of the sparge, but even then the temperature probably won't be in the right range and a correcton would need to be applied. I definitely agree that a refractometer would be a better choice for this application.

You don't measure preboil gravity?
Although I don't see the point, you can temperature correct a hydrometer as well.
