Ok, this is a perfect question for the beginners sections. I just got an American amber session series from austin homebrew supply and was curious if the order of ingredients is right. this is only my second attempt so forgive my idiocy here.

The previous recipe I had called for adding the extract after steeping however this recipe has me steeping the grains, adding the hops and boiling for a full hour before adding the extract.

Can someone assure me that this is what I want to do. Remember, I am a guy so I am genetically predisposed to questioning ingredients.

Thanks for the help.

Hi from Memphis!

What zode said. I assume you are doing a partial boil on a stove top too, then adding top up water? If so, doing a "late addition" of the extract allows full hop utilization. If the wort is too strong right from the get-go, you don't get as many IBUs from those hops.

Man, I have to say I am so happy I came across this website because it takes about 3 mins to get the answer to your questions. Everyone on here is great.

Let me also say thanks to Forrest. It is because of your fast responses to other threads that I have ordered this kit and am making another order later in the week.

Just got done eating/refreshing the page for an answer and now will begin brewing.

Thanks,

This is funny. I just posted about this in another thread. Austin homebrew must have it more together than a lot of other kit manufacturers. I always add my extract in the last 20 minutes of the boil. If you boil for more than that it can cause caramel flavors in your beer and impart the 'extract' taste you sometimes hear all grain brewers talk about. I heard about this on the brewing network.

Late extract addition does two things: it boosts the extraction of the bittering hops for more IBUs and keeps the color lighter.
