So you know what grinds my gears? When people ask a simple question that requires a simple explanation, yet people respond with snarky, arrogant comments like "get new equipment" or "buy a bigger kettle" or "upgrade to stainless."

Obviously, as homebrewers, we all want the most technologically advanced equipment possible and to brew our beers the most efficient ways possible..but that isn't always practical. Many of us are brewers on a budget and can't afford to go out and buy equipment upgrades. We work with the equipment we have and we adjust and adapt when need be. We upgrade when we can. Maybe it's just me, but I don't have extra $$ every week to spend on new brew equipment.

Too many times I see people saying basically "go buy all this new equipment and it will solve your problem" when there are oftentimes easier answers to get similar results. While I'm sure the original poster appreciates the suggestion and will keep the new equipment in mind, most often they are asking "what can I do with what I have?" Or "What can I do most simply." There are so many ways to solve a particular problem, and yet some people always suggest the most impractical, expensive ways.

I realize that the most simple answer is not always the best answer, but I've found that most times, it works. And it saves me from going out and buying possibly unnecessary equipment that I may not be ready to implement into my brewing process.

Sorry for the rant, I just tire of the arrogance of some people on this forum.

Endrant.

Haha I actually have a degree in psychology.

Sorry im not an expert by any means (at homebrewing or psychology :D) it just seems that the idea of Occam's Razor should be applied more often on this forum.

I know, right?
A- "I don't know why all my batches in these 20 y/o plastic buckets are all going bad!!!!!!!! help????????"
B- "Get new buckets. Or, if you can, get a stainless conical. Well worth the investment."
A- "Some of us work for a living. I'm looking for a cheap fix to squeeze another 20+ years out of all my scratched plastic."
what an arrogant a-hole person "B" must be!

in all seriousness, I have actually never been on a site full of people willing to help any chance they get. some of us are sarcastic as the day is long, but most of us are far from arrogant. I'm sorry you didn't hear what you wanted right away.

Buckets are cheap that was not an example I would have used to describe my point..

It wasnt anything that necessarily happened to me, just a general observations after having read through many threads on this site.

I guess im the ignorant one here..

We try very hard not to allow any arrogant replies, and encourage those who "can't say something nice to not say anything at all". There is an easy way to help with this- click "report this post" button and the mods will intervene and encourage others to help out.

Especially when in the beginner's forum- we especially expect others to be understanding and supportive, or they can stay out of the beginner's forum.

I'm sorry that you feel that some replies you saw were not up to what we expect from our members, but without any examples or complaints, we can't fix it.

I'm glad you said that Yoop. If there examples, I'd love to see them. I sell pricy equipment but I talk people out of buying things more often than not.

Actually, you have talked ME out of buying some items now that I think about it! :D

OP, I know you haven't met me or BobbyM, unless you were in Grand Rapids at the National Homebrew Conference- but Bobby is the antithesis of arrogant. He's one of the nicest, most genial guys I know.

Most of us are are pretty nice, down-to-earth folks who try to be helpful. My excuse for when I screw that up is that I drink. :drunk:

I agree that those types of responses can grind some gears, but in my short tenure on this site I havent seen a lot of blunt statements like "just get a new kettle". I imagine that they do exist, Im not denying that, but Ive found people to be very friendy and "go out of their way helpful" on this site. Whenever Ive had a question, people have jumped right in and helped. Ive been on plenty of mountain bike forums (wont name any of them), but have noticed a lot more "just buy new such and such" on those forums. :mug:

I do agree..I greatly enjoy this forum. Most everyone is helpful in one way or another. I suppose I was agitated in my original post. Ive seen it but you are right, it isn't too often.

I think maybe you just need to buy a bigger kettle and it'll all be ok :D

So, you're saying a PID controlled HERMS system that you can control from your iPhone isn't the "simplest" solution? (Actually, I don't know what a PID is, and I am vague on what HERMS really means- I like shiny, manual stuff).

Actually, I think that the general experience on HBT is to go "do it yourself" in a rather minimalistic method.

But in any public group, snarkiness will occur.

I have just decided that no matter what you say, I'm going to disagree with you. I do not have a valid or arguable reason for doing so. I'm just gonna be that guy.:rockin:

If you see that please report it. Unless it's information leading to the success of a brewer I don't think it's a good idea to let those type of comments remain. On top of that it reflects poorly on us all as we see the post holiday surge of new brewers.

Will do. Thank you.

I agree that it is annoying when it does happen, and it's not just about buying equipment, but inclusive of people's preferences and prejudices. Telling people to keg when they have a bottling question, to just buy extra malt when they have an efficiency question, to use a bucket when they have a carboy question, and on and on and on.

But like Yooper said, the mods are pretty good about putting the smack down on the really unnecessary comments (having received a Yooper reprimand myself once), and in general the folks here are pretty awesome.

Back in the days before forums, when all we had was rec.craft.brewing and the HBD, I had been brewing about a month and reading all I could. Most of it was over my head, and on the HBD there was just one single thread, sent out as a daily digest of questions and responses, some from advanced brewers, some from newbies (one can even find posts from John Palmer and AJDelange), Jim Busch offered some good advice when you find a post you don't agree with: "Piss off and scroll down for crissakes."

Of course, here on HBT, we can simply report the worst offenders, using the report feature on the post.
