Are glass carboys really better than buckets???

I prefer being able to see in the primary and secondary. That being said, I went to buckets for primary a few years ago for ease of fruit additions in mead and more headspace. I've kept glass secondaries until this week when I ordered PET carboys. Too many scares with glass, including sliding down the stairs in socks with 5 gallons of red wine (the wine was thankfully not hurt). All the glass is going on craigslist.

There's no way this post was made sober at that hour...

I use glass. Started with plastic, but quickly moved to glass as I liked to watch the action, still do. Just love getting up the next morning after brewday and seeing the nice layer of krausen building up. It's comforting.

Was only 10 pm here but i was pulling long nights editing a rushed video for a client. That and this phonescautocorrect is messed up.

In actuality i dont use glasd carboys nor buckrts. I use 46 liter mdpe plastic carboys for fermenors and cold condition in kegs. In the summer i cant cold condition so i sometimes filter.

Oxyegen permiability "issue" makes me laugh.

There are upsides to both and minor downsides to both. At least plastic carboys dont shatter on contact with a small rock on the floor. Had that happen with one once. It was full of water thankfully.

I went plastic due to size and cost. 10+ gallons glass containers are not practical and SS gets expensive. Even used sanke kegs cost double what the plastic carboys cost here.

Oh and yeah. Watching yeast do its thing in a glass carboy is a trip though!

I use BetterBottle carboys (cheaper than glass but this one wasn't) and buckets. I also don't use anything to clean them but this and some PBW. Works for kegs as well.

What's that?!

What's that?!

It's a keg/carboy/bucket washer. Basically a pump, bucket, carboy stand and some PVC pipe with fittings. Takes ~30 minutes to clean the really dirty ones. :ban: You can build it yourself or buy one online like this one from MoreBeer.
