Just curious if anyone has actually tried pat's backcountry beverages?
http://www.patsbcb.com/
I found a few threads with comments by others thinking it would taste horrible, but I wonder if anyone on here has actually tried it and has any feedback?. Sounds cool. I'm planning a backpacking trip, 5 days, and can't carry in that much beer. I'm not a huge fan of whiskey, and a beer tastes so good after hiking. I'll probably just give it a try for fun, but curious if anyone else has?

Let us know how it works out for you. I will pack cans so that they don't break and I can crush them and hike out with minimal weight/size. To me it's more about quality than convenience so the taste of the beer would matter. I do understand the "gadget appeal" though. There are a lot of gadgets sold in camping stores.

Funny, this reminds me of the beer bomb idea I had awhile back. Brew a one gallon batch at 5% ABV, but with the hops and specialty grains of a 5 gallon batch. Ferment out and pasteurize, then bottle in the little 1.5 oz 5 hour energy bottles. Next time you're at an event with just BMC, just mix your beer bomb into flavorless American lager, voila. Probably half baked, but might be fun to try. Add neutral spirits to bring up the ABV and you could use like the product in the OP.

It seems to me there was another similar product we discussed earlier in the year about these things? Some other new brand?

Well, although I really, really was hoping it would taste ok, I have to report, sorry Pat, that it was terrible! And keep in mind I love my homemade craft beer, but I also don't mind drinking PBR when I go camping either... so i'm not a complete beer snob. To me it tasted like cheap whiskey mixed with some kind of nasty syrup that had a horrible after taste. Maybe if there was at least a hint of hops it would've helped. It's the first time I actually carried alcohol out of the woods. Good thing we did actually bring whiskey! The carbonator thing was kind of a cool idea, but didn't carb well at all... I admit this could have been a little of my fault, because it was kind of a pain to shake and mix the thing. By the time you mixed one up, you really didn't want to clean it out and try mix another. So, my honest opinion, it was not drinkable and did not taste like beer. I hate to knock a product so bad, but even after hiking 5 miles into the mountains with 40+ pounds on my back, I still wouldn't drink it. I do hope the product can be improved upon (by leaps and bounds!!!) but until then, it's liquor when back packing. Note: there were sodas that came with the kit that I didn't try... they could have been great, but I can't comment on them.
