OK looks like I'm going to take the job in Maryland. Wife is thinking about living in Northern VA (she isn't the one that has to commute:mad: ) Anyway was checking taxes and saw "Tangible and non-Tangible property tax" WTF is that? they are going to tax my Furniture, TV, Fridge, Clothes... Need someone living there to explain.. Military is exempt so no one here that's lived there can answer the question.

Virginia is one of the last commonwealths and as such has a lot of taxes. I can't differentiate between tangible and non-tangible but do know that we pay Personal Property taxes on ALL vehicles and trailers. Our last Governor was trying to eliminate the Personal Property taxes, but our current one is not as motivated. Sales tax in VA is 4.5% but in northern Va it could possibly be more. I'm sure someone else will pick up where I left off.

Best of Luck.

The new bridge is open although the traffic pattern is still a little screwy. I don't know about that tax you're asking about but there is a car tax. This is the 1st state I've lived where I've had to pay an annual tax to own a car.

That caught me off guard when I first moved to Massachusetts. Of course, the first year I was driving a beater, so it was only like $30; bought a new car, though, and all of a sudden I'm coughing up $300 something. ******* socialists.

Like the man said..."Taxation WITH representation ain't so good either"!

I don't know about that property thing, but I will tell you this: Do whatever you possibly can to stay away from DC, and by extension 495 (the beltway) during, basically, every hour in the day. We have the 2nd-worst traffic in the nation there, outside of L.A. We're worse than Hot-Lanta.

Just sayin'.
