Anyone here tracking/logging their fermentation temps on a computer?

Just saw this on Engadget and ordered one: dual temp USB termometer

Thats pretty cool. I could def use it right now, I have 10 gallons of ale in the fermenting cooler with the temp controller set to 63, but I also have 10 gallons of lager in the garage that has been fluctuating between 45 to 55. It would be nice to have a text tell me what temp it is at while I am at work! :D

I have used my arduino to upload info to pachube online. Can monitor multiple items if I can only find more time to program it.

Subscribed, I want this, badly

You could run it to do a post to twitter every hour and follow it via smart phone.

only $35 shipped. I'll let you guys know how it is once it arrives.

Then I'd have to get a computer just for logging temps. Unless this works independently of the USB adapter and logs onto the device, and just transfers the data when you plug it in. But, it doesn't look like it has any other power source except the USB port.

I sure would like to do something like that, though. Right now I just take measurements and record them manually in Beersmith.

...I want that. (said like that lady in Napoleon Dynamite when she sees the ship model)
Definitely let us know how it works! I'm interested to see the needed set up for it to text you or tweet about it!

I might have to get this thing. I am away from home a lot and use arduino/Pachube to monitor my temps. I wonder if this could be used to post data to a website instead of using the email feature. hmm

If only there would be an easy way to use it and program your pc to turn on/off heating/cooling devices :cross:

Ace you could set it to email the twitter email for your account and have it posted :)

There is. It's called an arduino, or one of the dozens of devices that use the -duino suffix. They are inexpensive and easily programmable via your computer. You can assign them almost any function(s). Turning heating/cooling on and off wouldn't be too hard at all.

Is there a good info source for how to do this with arduino? My son (12) has done a bit of robotics using one with an electric eye. I assume there would be a temperature probe available, and then what? A way to wire it to a temp controller on a fridge to kick on the power if it drops?

I have two houses 3.5 hours apart and spend alternating weeks at different locations. This would take a little of the surprise put of brewing at least, and if the system sent an alert I do have someone that could check on things for me.

arduino looks very interesting, i need to read more
Thanks for the info

Now that I'm fermenting in my conicals I have them hooked up to a Webcontrol board from CAI Network

I'e got it hooked to an 8 relay board. For around the same cost of a dual stage ranco I can control 8 things.

I've got a script running on a pc that polls the board and graphs all the data. Kind of cool to be able to change the set temp without going out to the garage

This sounds like exactly what I need, as I'm "off site" for a week to ten days at a time quite frequently. I'll explore it a bit, but I'll probably be coming back with questions.
