I picked up the one on stout, seemed well written and researched. It has lots of history, but also good info on brewing. A little outdated at this point in time, but expansive enough to be worth it in my opinion.

I am wondering if this is a good series for a homebrewer? I don't just want to learn about beer, but also how to make it myself.

Probably the best book to learn how to make beer yourself is "How to Brew" by John Palmer. John has been gracious enough to put the entire first edition online for free at

There have been some addiitons and corrections incorporated in the second edition that I feel make purchasing it worthwhile. I've been brewing for several years and still go back to this book occasionally to clarify something.
