After searching the interwebz for a few hours I came up with a plan to add a hint of coffee to my chocolate stout. I racked it to a secondary and let it sit a few more days (I left it three weeks in the primary, OG of 1.076ish). Two days ago I added my coffee flavor using this method:

1. Pour 1 cup vodka into a mason jar
2. Add 6 oz. of whole coffee beans to the vodka (I used mocha java). This was enough to get the beans submerged a little.
3. Let the beans sit in the vodka for about 8 hours.
4. I poured off some of the vodka and made a white russian with it; it was fantastic, but you can skip this step lol.
5. Add to the secondary.

After two days I could smell coffee if I forced some bubbles through the airlock. This morning I had a taste, and it's right where I want it to be. I'll be bottling this afternoon :)

I wondered how to get the coffee taste without fear of contaminating the beer. I am assuming you used Vodka as a sanitizer? Sounds great. Let us know how it turns out.

When you say "add to the secondary," are you adding the beans, the coffee-infused vodka, or both?

Also, I may have to try this technique just for the black russians. :) It's my drink of choice when I'm out of homebrew.

Yes, I figured vodka would sanitize the beans, but as I'm sure you know, they come free of contamination and in airtight packaging for the most part.

I ended up adding about a half cup of coffee infused vodka as well as the beans. hah yeah black russians is where the other half ended up.

BTW... I saved a pint of the flat warm **** and I'm drinking it right now cause it was so good haha.

The last Chocolate stout I did the whole beans went right into the secondary. No sanitizers whatsoever and I left them in there for 2 weeks. Perfect amount of coffee flavor and aroma. They were Kona Beans BTW.
