I Was brewing a double ipa but my OG was lower then it was supposed to be. I have no idea what happened but it is what it is.

The beer might get up to 6%. (maybe a LITTLE higher) but with my new efficiency put into my brew calculator....I'm at 202 calculated ibu's . I know that's not the actual ibu's but its still really hoppy for what my beer is.

Anyone ever do this?

Not on purpose!

What's the recipe? Maybe it'll be great session IPA.

It's a rip off of the Pliny the elder recipe. I changed some things around to work with what I had.

Malt Bill
12 pounds of 2 row
1 pound of carapils
8 ounces of crystal 60
1 pound of sugar

Hops schedule:
90 minutes: 3.5 ounces of Columbus
45 minutes: 1 ounce of Columbus
30 minutes: 1 ounce of 7 C's
Aroma hops: 2.5 ounce Columbus
1 ounce 7 C's
Dry hop:
12 days: 1 ounce Columbus
2 ounces 7c's
Last 5 days: 2 ounces Columbus.

Any thoughts? I think I hit around 57% efficiency. It still makes no sense how I got this low. I did everything the same as I always do

Well I brewed a IPA I call Citra Warrior because of the hops.

I had to let it age for a few months before I could drink it...

It... the bitterness slowly mellowed over the year and was a very complex beer...

I have brewed it since just to use some of my many bottles... Since I usually keg.

Unfortunately I wanted to drink this a month and a half from now. I have a buddy coming in town that really likes double iPa's.

On a better note, I'm leaving for 3 months in October, so it should be tasting good by Christmas!

Something tells me we're gonna beet this one into the ground.

In all seriousness, brewing with beets sounds very interesting.

I actually have heard of ppl using beet juice for color in thier beer. Not sure of it does anything to the flavor though.

Anyway, the thread... Looks like you used a tremendous amount of hops compared to your grain bill, might be unpalletable, but couldnt you always make another batch of beer with low ibus and mix them? You know thin the beer out? That way you could still drink it in 6 weeks and you wouldnt be wasting anything...

Just beet it.

TOO HOPPY??

Know what they charge for a sixer of ruination???????

Not to beet a dead horse, but if you are unhappy, PLEASE ship it to me for proper disposal.

I'm not sure if anyone else does this but..........I just got home and smelled the bubbles coming out of my fermentor. This beer smells amazing.

Seriously I want to brew with beets some time, thats why I visited this thread with very little usefull info on beets,I might add. But funny thread. Especially the M.J .part,ha ha. Mikkeller made a 1000 ibu beer, and yeah it pretty much tastes like 1000 ibu's so compare that if you will. Maybe a 200 ibu beet beer will be in the making for me in the future. Sweet Purple Ipa. And eat your beets too by the way, they are good for thy liver. They are currently in season too.
Ive actually had one commercial beer brewed with beets from Two brothers,it was ok. Sorry your thread,"Went there"

Magic hat brews a beer with sugar beets. I can't remember the name...

Lol, I know I ALWAYS do!!

Unfortunately, what you smell is hop aroma and flavor leaving in the Co2.

Rest assured that much remains, but my least hoppy brews smell like Hoptimist Prime the first few bubbles!

I wouldn't be remotely concerned about missing the OG from an OG vs IBU perspective. The IBU bump up should be pretty much unnoticeable as you were so high up on the IBU scale to begin with. If anything, it might give you a bit more of a slick or "oily" mouthfeel.

What I would be concerned about, if anything, is why you missed the OG an what that might mean. Did you overshoot your temp so the beer won't dry out? Was it simply a bad crush so it probably won't have a material taste difference (other than ABV)? Just weighed the grains wrong ? That's the stuff I would be very mildly concerned about.

Either way, I would NOT let this beer sit around until Christmas or really any longer than you would have originally done. Like I was saying, the IBU number, once really over 100, is just a number and mouthfeel. I think letting it sit longer, especially with the lower ABV, would more damage than benefit.

As for me saying "I'll let it sit till Christmas"....it's very rare a let a beer sit too long. But I'll probably hide a sixer or 2 away to compare the difference.
