Are there any good indoor full-volume boil options? Preferably, one that could boil 6 gallons so if it's especially hot or cold outside, I can avoid propane (not just because I'm afraid of heat or the cold, but because it's tougher to predict what's going to happen during a mash in temperature extremes... and I live in a third floor apartment so it's probably inadvisable for me to be using propane in the first place).

Are there any known electric ranges, fryers, etc. out there that can do the job?

Also, I'm looking for something that's not going to electrocute me, caramelize my wort, or force me to become an electrical engineer to create.

I did some research and was very excited, for a short time, about turkey fryers. Unfortunately, I can't find any electric turkey fryers that seem capable of boiling ~6 gallons of wort at one time. The largest I could find was 28 quarts (outdoor ones go up to 40+ quarts, but that defeats the purpose).

Thanks for any help you can give!

Search "Split full boil". I think if you had more than one 3.5 gallon kettle, you could do a full boil on a natural gas stovetop.

Check my sig for CB20, I do full boils indoors in my kitchen and love this system.

Heatsticks do seem somewhat attractive, especially if they're well made (i.e. not made by me).

At the top of my list are two options:

1) Electrical Fryer: These are pretty inexpensive as something to try out. They have a heating element and usually a 28 quart kettle inside. This seems like enough to do just about a full boil at 5 gallons or so. The main advantage of this one is that you can find them on eBay/Craig's List for ~$50+ S&H.

2) Brew Kettle w/ Heating Element: High Gravity sells heating elements, and they also have Build Your Own Brew Kettles. These have a lot of advantages, such as being able to also put it on the stove at the same time, but it's pretty expensive to customize a kettle (though just getting a heating element is not very expensive).

hmnmmm.... my stove is running on lp. there's no danger there. maybe because i only get ~60k btus if all 4 burners and oven are on.

i would say, safety first!

:off:

Mordantly - For a two line post you sure do take up alot of space with that big sig.................

The Aussies have recommend to me coffee urns. Unfortunately, I can't find any of similar size to theirs out here (they have 40L/10+ gal, while the largest we have available in the states seem to be 6+ gal). Still looking, but it seems like the jump goes from 100 cups to very large and very expensive commercial units here.

What I'm going to try first is a 7 gallon turkey fryer. I'm going to insulate it to make it easier to reach a boil, and I'll use foam control to prevent boilovers.

I expect to have to top the water off a bit or be okay brewing ~4.5 gallon batches, but that's fine.
