I just transferred to secondary. After seeing all that nice yeast at bottom I'm regretting not getting the stuff to wash and store that yeast. I feel like it is such a waste to dump it but i guess i don't have a choice. Sorry just had to vent
For future reference, you don't have to wash your yeast. I sanitize a mason jar and fill it as much as I can, straight from the fermentor. I washed a few times and haven't seen a difference doing it this much easier way. I do make starters though when using "unwashed" yeasts.
A few reasons why:
-I don't want to take the time or the resources to wash the yeast.
-I don't brew with the same yeast often enough to reuse that slurry when its most viable.
-I don't want to chance an infection.
But thats me. Everybody has their own system, thats what makes homebrewing great.
I definitely have no proper jars to store it. I'm definitely gonna do it next time. I just know my next batch will be a dipa and I would need a good amount of yeast. I will definitely do it next time. Using washed yeast helps with making a starter get going faster right. I just want to try a new step each time. Its safale 05 so im pretty sure i will use it a lot. I feel bad for the yeast. They did a great job for me and now I'm rewarding them with a trip to the garbage
