Hi all I was thinking of branching out a bit and brewing some lagers but I don't have ant refrigeration equipment just yet. Has anyone had success using alternative yeasts like California common and kolsch to brew pilsners bocks and other traditionally lagered beers. Thanks again
 
Yea, folks do it all the time. You just use a clean, neutral ale yeast, and ferment as cool as you can.

For example Rogue dead guy ALE, is a Maibock "styled" ale. Meaning maibocks are traditionally lagers, but in rogue's case it uses ale yeast (pacman).

And a lot of starter kits (like cooper's or brewer's best) aren't true lagers either, the grainbill is, but knowing that new brewers usually can't lager yet, use a neutral ale yeast.
