I am brewing my first high gravity all grain batch tomorrow and was wondering if there was anything I should look for that is different from a standard ale recipie? Any suggestions or tips are welcome.....thanks`!
Possibly look at longer mash. Plan for lower efficiency. Need more info on what you're brewing and what your expectations are. I'd make sure you have some DME on hand either way. Good luck!
doing a black IPA with about18 lb grain bill. Looking for technique suggestions. the recipie suggestions are saying at least a 75 minute mash. I'll prob do 90 min mash and 60 min boil. the plan is to mash at 152* for 90 and get bout 75% since my other grain brews have been bout there.......6 gal finished product.....
Mashing at 152 for 90 sounds like a plan. I would drop you efficiency down to 70% if you have typically been gettting 75% on normal size beers. You will take a little hit on efficiency but in my experience is hasn't been anything to drastic. I would plan a tad bit lower than your average efficiency though ..........
Other than that it's the same as any other brew. Have a nice yeast starter or consider pitching two packs of dry.
I'd still have some DME on hand. With a black IPA you could increase your boil time to 90 and leave hop schedule at 60 min base to increase your OG if you miss instead of the DME. I've done some big beers lately and my eff has been closer to 65%. Good luck!
Thanks for the tips gang......what is the best way to calculate efficiency in your opinion?? I do use 5.2 in the mash so my ph is good....will that make a difference in a HG beer??
Definitely use the 5.2. I use beersmith and it's the best $20 bucks I've spent on brewing. It does all the math for you. Enter your recipe and you can change the efficiency and it recalculates the grain bill for you
