I'm fermenting a Russian Imperial Stout. I have had a few IPA's clog my airlock with krausen and I usually just remove, clean, re sanitize, and add a blow off. This time, after adding the blowoff, foam is rapidly coming out of the bucket, through the tube, and into the growler I am using with the blowoff tube. The water in the growler is turning black and the foam is causing the blow off to back up. The lid on the bucket is doming and air and beer is seeping out from under the edges of the lid. I'm afraid I will have a beer explosion even with the blow off... What can I do in addition to the blowoff tube?!

It may be clogged, or the end may be stuck to the bottom of the growler. Lift the tube up, if it bubbles, it's the tube sticking to the bottom of the growler- punch a hole in the side near the end of it.

If it's clogged, remove, wash with very hot water, sanitize, and reinstall.

If it gets really bad you could always pop your lid off and just sit it on top of the bucket (loose). It might not be ideal, but it won't explode.

If you have a one gallon jug. Fill it wit just enough diluted starsan to cover the tubing. The blow off will be aggressive and may start to fill the jug but it will eliminate the bulge in the lid for you. Continue to keep an eye on the tube and clean as necessary. When no more krausen then switch to an S airlock.

If the krausen is still coming out of the tube, you could just clean and replace the catch jar. If it is not spewing or bubbling gas, it is probably clogged. Carefully remove the hose, be prepared for a volcano, then clean, sanitize and replace the tube.
