I picked up this stir plate on amazon recently and thought I would pass it on:

Super cheap and so far it's worked great. I've ran two starters on it so far, one of them a two-stepper, each with 36-hour runs between cold crashes. Very quiet and works well. I doubt it would hold up to heavy duty lab use, but for making homebrew starters once in a while, I think it's fine. I've been using a 2L flask on it and it fits well.

Looks good indeed!
I particularly like the low profile.

Is the magnetic coupling nice and strong? IOW, have you tried with a none-flat bottomed vessel, such as a 1/2 gallon pickle jar, large mason jar etc.? If it doesn't throw the bar that's an indication of magnetic strength.

I haven't used it with anything but the 2L Erlenmeyer flask. It's able to generate a pretty good whirlpool without throwing the bar, but I'm not sure how it would perform with a vessel with a curved bottom.
