So, I have 5gal of an 8.8% stout that I added 3 cups of a 99proof liquor to before bottling. Does anyone know how to determine an approx abv%???

3 cups = .1875 gal

8.8% of 5 gal gives you .44 gal of alcohol in the existing beer

99% of .1875 gal gives you .1856 gal of alcohol in the 3 cup addition

new total volume is 5.1875 gal. Add the 2 alcohol volumes and you get .625 gal of total alcohol.

.625/5.1875 = .12

12%

Your math is correct, except he used 99 Proof alcohol, not 99%. So your third line should be "99 Proof of .1875 gal gives you .0928 gal of alcohol in the 3 cup addition."

.44 + .0928 = .533 gal total alcohol

.533/5.1875 = 10.27%
