I was looking at the recipe kits on these two sites and none of them show the alcohol content on them. Am i missing something? I just kind of like to know what the abv is before i purchase anything.

Maybe it's because they don't know what kind of FG you'll actually get. It depends too much on the brewer.

You could get a decent estimate by assuming 70-75% attenuation, then take OG minus FG times 1.3, roughly.

NB's Nut Brown has an OG of 1.044. You get down to ~1.012, 32 x 1.3 = 4.2% AV, more or less.

ADD: very roughly, the OG gives you the ABV. A 1.060 beer is around 6%, etc.

Humm....you must be missing something: even when I check the extract kits on Northern Brewer...even their initial list of kits say the OG. You can infer ABV from OG. Roughly, it's similar to the OG reading, but the absolute ABV is determined by your yeast's attenuation.

there are many variables that will affect what your ABV is going to be. I know NB shows the target OG, you should be able to get a feel for how strong a beer should be based upon that.

You never know ABV until you take a starting and final gravity reading. Take the difference between the 2 and multiply by 131. 6lbs of LME will usually put you in the 4.5-5% range and 9 in the 6.5-7% range. It of course also depends on other fermentables.

Sorry for my ignorance i am a very new brewer just picked it up a month ago. Learning slowly but surely.
