So me and a buddy decided we want to home brew. It will be the first time for both of us. I actually picked up a freezer, 20# co2, and dual regulator. My question to you guys ...is it better to start from scratch or buy a kit? Is there anything I would need to "watch out" for equipment wise? Should I build anything? Thanks...

I personally started with all grain because I wanted to learn and experience the full process of beer making when I started out. It really depends how much work you want to put in. Extract eliminates some time and work, though doesn't really degrade the quality of the beer. All grain is nice if you also want to get into creating your own recipes.

For equipment, you can get all sorts of starter kits. I would start simple at first and see if you enjoy the process before you spend all sorts of money on high end equipment.

Also, sanitation is key.

I would recommend working towards BIAB in a turkey fryer, or a 10G aluminum pot with a propane burner for a little more $.

Extract for your first few batches, learn to sanitize, learn to pitch appropriately and ferment with controlled temps.

This is a great group, a great hobby. Study the forum stickies, lots of great info. in them.

Ok cool will do. He's read a book on it...I've been "researching" by drinking what I like haha. Hopefully I can get around to learning a few things. It's just kinda overwhelming when I read some of the process and see the abbreviations. And some of the stuff I see on Craig's looks frankensteiny and scary haha
