Brewed my first today. Stout made from ingredient kit put together by my local home brew store. I think the only thing I can tell that went wrong was when i was putting the first half of the partial boil into the better bottle carboy. It went in a touch hot... and the carboy is a bit disfigured... If it was glass I assume it would have cracked.

Yeast has been pitched. The cool down was fairly quick thanks to Buffalo weather. All the snow you can handle here today.

I did a yeast starter that I am not sure was all that active before pitching but we shall see. The exp. on the package was far in the future so here's to hoping

I am sure my first batch freakout is coming sooner or later but for now its just wait and see.

You definately need to cool down the wort before you put it into the Better Bottle. Cool it down to yeast pitching temps before you transfer it next time.

Plus you don't want to o2 your wort when it is warm. It will give off flavors.

oh the yeast was pitched at 75 deg F. My boil was a partial ( followed instructions from a home brew store kit which assumed I Did not have a 30qt kettle) the hot water boiled and cooled a bit from the non wort.

SO... I put this into secondary today. Took a little taste of the hydrometer sample. Tastes like a warm stout to me. No off flavors... Huzzah.

I did the same thing this weekend to my oatmeal stout(poured hot water into plastic carboy) and i was wondering if it would give it any plastic off flavors. nothing like that in yours was it?

One word of advice, though I have never used a better bottle as a primary. I cool my wort down to 100 F or so and then add refridgerated topoff water. Brings it down to pitching temperature.

No off flavors. I have constructed an immersion chiller to avoid any of these problems though. Currently I rack into the better bottle (less hot aeration chance) then pitch when I am at my absolute favorite pitching temp. All the brews I have done are relatively quick in the maturation dept. May use a glass secondary for a barely wine I have been putting together. FreeM80s doesnt it feel good to know you aren't the only knucklehead!
