I have seen others using the same thing, Bayou Kettles has some, for BIAB....It looks like it would work good for that.

+1 to this
I started out with I think an 8 gallon turkey fryer with the spout for all grain.... but Bayou has some great deals and won't charge you the extra 8 bucks for shipping. Always liked their stuff, especially their burners....I have 2 KAB4's.
Only thing I noticed about their turkey fryers is that I don't see a spout....but still worth checking out

Meh, good place to start, but anybody that I know in brewing that started out with aluminum has moved to stainless.
Also, for that price you could buy two kegs and chop em.

the 16.5 gallon stainless bayou classic version with the ball valve is avaliable for the same prices I bought two...
and the version without the hole of $6 ballvalve is only $92 without shipping...
the basket isnt needed at all for biab.

I would skip drinking all that dissolved aluminum myself....

Yeah, for the price there are better starter pots out there. I highly recommend MoreBeer's 8gal heavy duty brew kettle. This is something that can be used for the life of your brewing career. Even if you upgrade to bigger equipment or other methods, I guarantee you'll never permanently set this thing aside.

If you really just want to get going quickly, then buy the $70 turkey fryer with the aluminum pot and burner.

I would say skip it..

I do not like the look of the spigot and whether or not it can be removed for cleaning or replacement.

I also like Bayou Classic kettles, but I may be biased as I own two of them which I drilled myself.

The 10 gal BC kettle was $78 with another $25 in ball valve and hardware.

How did you drill yours??

Milwaukee step bit
Low speed / high torque drill from Harbor Freight (that I also use to power my Monster Mill)

And like any good drillin session.... Plenty of lube
:mug:

edit.... I also watched the YouTube videos from BobbyM about 10 times total to make sure that I was doing it right.

I was looking at the Concord DIY Kettles on Amazon. The swmbo told me to get the Bayou because I would never get around to drilling the holes for the valve and temperature gauge on the Concord. She knows me to well....LOL

Cheers :mug:

I use these. Less than $100 on Amazon Prime so free fast shipping. Get a real ball valve and other kettle hardware at one of the vendors that support HBT :)

Bobby M has some good videos out there for drilling holes and customizing kettles. It's actually pretty fun.

Even for 5-6 gallon batches, an 8 gallon kettle is a bit small. No headspace. Better of with a 10-12 gallon one.

I have the 8 gallon MoreBeer Heavy Duty, and it's a great kettle, works well with induction too. Just wish it were a bit larger.

This.... Was my main motivation when I went to 10g SS.
I too am in the camp of.... Yeah it'd be cool to drill the holes exactly where I think I want them, but would I really have/take the time to do it? Probably not. Kudos to those that do, but that's just not me.
All I will say about the Al vs SS is to simply do the research. Most myths have been adequately debunked.

I watched those videos before making my decision. I was going to do a DIY but when the swmbo says I can spend more to get something I'm not gonna argue with her...lol

Those videos are really good!

Well my kettles ended up over $200 by the time I added two bulkheads, a ball valve, cam locks, high flow elbow dip tube, wort return tube and site glass.
