Just brewed a double hop head ipa from Midwest supplies. Used 2.5 gallons of water . And lost a ton of water in the boil . Should I
Boil more water? Or add some during the boil? This kit called for boiling for a really long time
I think I lost over a gallon

And also how to you recommend dry hoping in a 5 gallon better bottle ? Thanks!!
 
Add the water to the fermenter at the end. Either use water that you boiled for a little while and cooled or buy and add spring water.
 
Just start with more water if you have the option. If not, you can just add the water up to your batch size. Just watch your gravity and make sure you hit it and don't dilute it to much and you should be fine.

How many ounces of hops are you using?
 
You could start with 3.5 gallons,& just don't boil so vigorously. You need the water to boil just enough to get good movement in the boil. By the time it's done,you should be close to 2.5 gallons. I do patial boils,& just top up to the total recipe amount. If you do everything right,you'll be at or a hair above the posted OG. Extracts are pretty easy that way.

I am just trying o figure out why the instructions would say 1.5 gallons of water would work.. Wouldn't you loose all the water
 
wait the boil was 4 hours..? i think you better post the recipe & what you did, step by step bc something seems real wrong. Your boil time should only be 60 minutes or less w extract.

also, next time don't boil w/ the lid on.
 
I can't post the instructions right now , but they are on Midwest supplies web page. For the hop head double ipa
 
most boils are 60 - 90 min. 4 hours is way wrong. you can probably add non-chlorinated water to make up the difference. welcome to homebrewing !!!
 
Chinook 60 min wait 15
1/2 cascade 45 min wait 15
1/2 centennial 30 min wait 10
1/2 cascade 20 min wait 10
1/2 centennial 10 min wait 5
1 oz crystal 5 min

That is standard 60 min boil recipe. Not sure what you did. Once boil is reached (or hot break if you are all grain), start 60 min timer & insert 60 min hops, then 15 min later insert 45 min hops, etc. when timer goes off you are done, kill flame, cover & do your chill regimen.

Anyways, you need 5 gallons (depends on recipe) into fermenter. So boil up (to sanitize) whatever water you need.

I wonder if he boiled 60 minutes with chinook, then after 60 minutes boiled 45 minutes more with cascade, then 30 minutes more with cascade and so on. Total boil time would be 2 hours and 50 minutes if done that way.

yeah that is totally what i was thinking.... a 170 min DIPA, sweet.
 
Yes had them in a reusable grain / hop nylon bag
Should I still dry hop I'm secondary ?

The first beer I did came out great, autumn amber ale . That just had two hops .couldnt screw that one up. So glad I talked to u guys. Thank u!!

I would still dry hop.

Just remember in the future boil a total of 60 minutes. Add the 60 minute hop, wait 15 minutes, add the 45 minutes hop, and so on.

Probably a better idea to ask in the future if you aren't sure.

Sure they can all go in the same bag. Correct they all stay till the boil is over.

For the recipe you posted here is how you would do it.

Once the wort is boiling add the chinook and start your timer for 60 minutes
After 15 minutes (45mintes left on timer) add 1/2 cascade, so now you have the chinook and the cascade in the pot
After 15 more minutes (30 mins on timer) add 1/2 centennial
After 10 minutes (20 mins on timer) add 1/2 cascade
After 10 minutes (10 mins on timer) add 1/2 centennial
Finally after 5 more minutes (5 mins on timer) add 1oz crystal

When the timer goes off shut the flame off and chill your wort.

Does that make sense? So the wort will boil a total of 60 minutes with multiple hops in the sack.
 
Yes it does make sense. Thank u for taking the time to help me . What would your observation be on how the beer turns out?
