Dogfish head 90 min IPA tastes like raspberry beer. I'm a bit dissapointed. I was expecting a big hoppy IPA.

I just brewed a Hop Devil clone (Victory Brewing) and found it didn't taste anything like a Hop Devil. However it did get better after the forth week in bottles and now at least tastes like an IPA. I'm very satisfied.
But still, it's closer to a session beer than a Hop Devil which to me is more of a sipper.
I used a kit from my LHBS and it was a partial grain.

I'd be interested in seeing your recipe, not because I know much about brewing (newb) but out of interest. I think (with my limited experience) that making IPA clones of this magnitude would take a bit more than what these kit clone recipes call for. For instance I didn't dry hop (not called for in the recipe) but I think IPA's like this have to be dry hopped to get that aroma.

I've had the 90 minute down at Dogfish Heads brew pub and I think a lot goes into really getting that hoppiness.
From what I understand it may take longer in the bottles to work that stuff out also.

Sean,

Did you have it out of the bottle or draft?

Yeah... that's VERY important here. I had DFH90 from the keg at the World Beer Festival this spring in Raleigh, and it was pretty good. BOSTON bought some a few weeks ago in the bottle and nobody who tried it could stand it. It was terrible out of the bottle, which is embarassing to the company since they print in HUGE FRIGGIN LETTERS on the six pack holder

They have clearly never tried mine. :)

Tonight, my friend. I need to call the wife and ask her to bring a few up from the basement and get them chilled. It's 11:00 in the morning and I'm craving a beer - should I be spending my time at AA.com?

Most Dogfish Head brews seem to have a strong raisin flavor to me. It's not a bad thing, but it's not a flavor I expect. A buddy and I got a mixed 6 of Dogfish to drink while brewing recently, and all of the first 5 had a similar raisin flavor. Then we got to #6 - Raison D'Etre, which is brewed with green raisins - same flavor but much more intense. I don't think they use raisins in most of their brews, but IMO there's something distinctly raisiny in the Dogfish aesthetic. Maybe some of the adjunct sugars they use? There's an article by Sam Calagione, the Dogfish Head honcho in September's BYO. It indicates that they use odd sugars quite a bit.

DFH 90 now in six packs?

Glibbidy, I'm pretty sure I saw DFH90 (sixers) at the Whole Foods Market in Hadley, if you happen to be down that way. I bought the 60 when I was there last, I'm 98% positive the 90 was there as well.

I've purchased a six at a distributor in Delaware. There were also 4 packs of 120.

Tommy

DFH60 in six packs yes, DFH90 in six packs, sounds like something new. They used to sell them in 4 packs, so that's cool. I'll check it out next time i'm and table and vine.
DFH 120 in 4 packs? Sounds like a small fortune at 8 something a bottle.

It *could* have been a four pack, it was a while ago - but I'm pretty sure it was a sixer. I'm pretty sure they had the 120 in a four-pack.

I've never seen the 90 in a six pack, just the 60. My sister-in-law is in town this week and she asked me if should could try a Dogfish. I said sure, thinking she was getting one of the 60's out of the six pack. Instead, I look over and she is taking a swig of the lone bottle of the 120 I've had kicking around for a few months. In her words, the 120 "is a dirty beer". I took a couple swigs to reaffirm my hatred of the 120 and promptly dumped it.
I've never tasted a rasberry or raisan flavor in the 60 or the 90. Actually, I just tasted my clone of the 60. It came out darker than the 60 (damn extract!) but not as bitter. mine had more head too.

maybe they use Special B malt in their recipes? that can give a raisin taste.

Sorry, you guys are probably right. It was the 60 min in six packs 90 in 4 packs and 120 was on tap.

Tommy

I am drinking a 60 min. at the moment (decided not to go into work today) and must admit that as far as IPA's go I prefer Sierra Nevada or Harpoon.

I have a sixer of the 60 in the basement. The first two weren't anything to write home about. It's an IPA, but not hopped enough and there was a weird after-taste. I'm attributing it to being bottled and shipped.

The 90...I've never gotten the fruit-taste from it. I like it though. Looking forward to the 120 bottle I have at some point.

I'm with Walker on trying his IPA. It smells heavenly in the primary. Going to secondary tonight with a taste-test. I might even do a hydrometer reading *ducks*.

I'mma dry-hop it probably with 1wk prior to bottling. It smells sooo good though. Walker, you ever dry-hop it with Northern Brewer AND Cascade? Any little variations you've done and been happy with?

I've only done it with cascade, but I'm considering trying it with the NB only next time... and maybe 2 oz of it for good measure.

My bad! 4-pack. Either way... that bold face lie is printed on the packaging. :)
I think another bold face lie on the package indicates it is bottle conditioned. I have been hard pressed to find the tiniest bit of sediment in any that I have consumed.

Northern Brewer tastes like raisins.

Exo,

I dry-hopped my IPA with 1 oz Cascade and 1 oz Centennial and man am I loving it. It sucks this beer is half gone and I just kegged it last weekend and I'm the only one drinking it. Is this a bad thing? I guess I'll just have to brew it again!:fro:

It was a four pack of bottles, and it wasn't bad, it just wasn't very good. It was pure raspberries, down to the saccherine (sp) sweet - soft tongue coating aftertaste.

OK maybe it was kinda bad.

LOL. It's ok to admit that you spent a lot of money on a beer you ended up not liking. We've probably all done it.

I spent about $10 on a single, big bottle of Ommegang's Wit and dumped it down the drain because I couldn't drink it.

I had the same experience with their wit. The Hennepin's might good though-had one last night.
