I've brewed many batches of beer before, but last weekend was my first time using a glass carboy. I filled the carboy a little above 5 gallons and threw on a blow off valve with an airlock on it. I checked back the next day and half my beer was gone and i noticed the bung was missing and beer was on the roof.. what might be the cause of this?

sounds like some krausen got up in your airlock and clogged it. with vigorous fermentations a blow off tube is a better choice

Half the beer sprayed all over your walls/ceiling and you didn't take pictures?! Argh!

Just happened to me too. Clogged blow off with yeast that was thicker then candle wax. I wish i just bought 6 gal carboys when i got started.

Fermenting 5 gallons in a 5 gallon carboy is asking for trouble. I guess it could be done if you could rig a blow off with a large diameter hose. Using a hose small enough to fit into the hole of a bung, is iffy.

Yea, this just happened to me too... The funny part with mine is it was in my clothes closet. I had beer all over my clothes, DVD cases, luggage, etc... My girlfriend had to help me do the 5 loads of laundry that came about from it... I had to wipe off all of my hangers... The truly bad part was I was on my way home from the brew store with the blow off tube when it happened... It was my first batch and I forgot to buy the blow off tube when I originally bought my equipment.... *sigh*

I guess I have been lucky. I use a 5 gallon carboy and a large blow off tube without a bung. Seems to work good.... So far.
