I am planning on picking up a corona mill soon. I have a 1/4 HP EC motor laying around that I can turn down to 300 rpm. Is 300 rpm too fast for a corona mill? I don't like the idea of putting sheaves on the motor or the mill as the bearings aren't designed for that load. Well, I don't want to buy them either.

That sounds really fast. Those mills were designed for hand cranking.
Why not do it right and buy a 2-roller mill? It's only $75 extra. Or $150 extra for a "better" model. Not saying that 300 rpm is the right speed for a 2 roller mill either... 150-175 rpm would be much better. I'd stay away from sheaves though, they're dangerous!

I have never tried either so I'm just asking, have you tried the corona mill? It seems to have very positive reviews in the corona thread.
If I were to put a drive package on it I would build guards. The guys on here I see with exposed sheaves and belts make me really nervous.

I have never tried a Corona mill, but I'm familiar with their design, a grooved plate spinning against a stationary one with a little space in between. They're a pretty crude design, even as a corn grinder. To mill grain you need to tighten the "gap" just enough to get a good crush. They spit grain out everywhere, from what I've read. But they do the job.
