I am planning on getting the 2 hearted ale close extract kit (3 hearted ale). it recommends using a 2nd fermentor. I only bought a beginner kit with one fermenter bucket, i know the 2nd fermentor isn't absolutely necessary but will it make that big of a difference, or can i just leave it in the primary for the whole time?

I used a secondary 90% of the time, Mostly to help clear up the batch. I don't believe it is absolutely necessary. But if you buy another bucket then you can start a another batch ;)

Unless you're adding fruit, spices, or gelatin finings, secondaries are not helpful. In fact there have been some studies that show extra time on the yeast cake to be a bit better (more efficient) than taking it off the cake.

Never used a secondary for beer but I have for cider. I think that was the only thing that stopped me from making apple rocket fuel.

I have a bourbon barrel ale kit from Midwest I plan to make here soon. I'll use a secondary just because it has to age/condition over bourbon soaked oak chips. So like people say unless you're imparting flavors or just have a huge beer, there isn't a real need to use a secondary.

thanks for all the replies guys, ill just leave it in the primary and not worry about it
