So, my first attempt (True Brew Amber) was a success, even though it was gone by the time it neared its full potential in the bottle. I didn't bother pulling out the hydrometer for that first batch, before or after fermentation; I was too busy with all the other excitement that goes along with brewing my first beer to bother with silly measurements.

This time around, with a True Brew Porter, I was much more comfortable and relaxed with the initial steps and overall concept of (extract) brewing, wanted to take the experience a step further, and decided to take an OG reading: about 1.050 - 1.052. Tonight, 5 days from the start of fermentation, I took another reading: 1.020 - 1.022.

If my calculations are correct, my porter is currently in the range of 3.6 - 3.7% ABV. Does this sound right to you experts?

This stuff smelled like chocolate when I opened the lid. I can't wait to try it, but I'm going to let it sit in the fermenter for another 2 weeks, then bottle and condition for at least 2 more weeks.
 
Actually, according to Beersmith you are at ~4.15% abv.

A quick and dirty formula is OG - FG x 129= ABV (it may not super accurate but it gets you in the ballpark)

Waiting a few weeks to bottle then a few weeks to condition is a great strategy, stick to it!
