Was fixing to make a yeast starter to see if my yeast survived shipping. Hear a crash and the yeast starter container i use is in pieces on the floor.

Still want to make a starter to see if the yeast are alive but only thing i can think of is a 2L coke bottle with a blow off tube held in place by some packing tape. Think it would work in a bind?

I've used two liters before with success. Wash and sanatize carefully.

Also, instead of a blow-off tube, I would just cover the opening losely with foil. I've also used a cotton ball soaked in star-san.

How much starter are you looking to make? According to what I read from John Palmer's book most containers will make do for a starter so long as you can sanitize it properly.

Mr Malty says 1.75 L but since this is a 2L bottle probably go with a 1.5L starter.

Drinking the coke now and i think i will give it a whirl. This is the yeast that i am not sure survived shipping anyway so if it doest work, not out much anyway.

On one of the podcast shows someone talks about this. They didn't use a blow off, just squeezed the bottle as much as they could, capped, and when the bottle expanded to full size, it was a sign to shake and add more oxygen. Open, shake, squeeze, re cap. Repeat as nessesary.

That's an interesting technique.
