Don't see it too much different than the guys trying to make the highest ABV beer. It's all publicity, and Flying Monkey's has some pretty good beers, and could probably use some more publicity. Not buying 50$ a bottle beer myself though.

"A hop-steeped wort re-circulated through an additional “Hop Vorlauf” punches up the insane intensity of this brew to a stupefying 2500 IBUs"

Um, what? Cough*Bull****

Well it has been discussed quite a bit on here that the absolute max IBUs one can hit is around 120 or so. The more sugar that goes in the more IBUs a beer can hold...but even clocking in at 13.3% I don't think this beer has more than that.

If it is any more than that then my guess is that they are dosing a crap load of Tetra Iso-Extract into the finished beer. Of course, that wouldn't make it into the press release because it sounds more like a chemical than people would like.

See the last BYOB episode. A calculated 300 IBU in one recipe translated to less than 100 IBU in practice. 2500 IBU is lame marketing hype and would require a ton of hop extract to achieve... and it would be unpalatable.

Exactly....I mean why not just drink hop water LOL

80-100 IBU's is plenty for the biggest IPA/IIPA I think. Any more then that, and your just wasting hops....

If i can ever save up enough money to brew this.... it will be a complete waste of time and money.

My eyes have now melted.

Would there be any liquid left in the boil kettle? Looks like you'd be left with a very thick hop porridge.

If you used whole cones, you'd have a pot full of damp hop cones.

According to beersmith, you'd only need 55 oz of warrior hops to get to 2500 ibu. That would only absorb around 4 gallons of wort if you used cones in a 6 gallon batch.

A month or two ago, I had the Hop 1000 from Mikkeller. Pretty much just a regular ol' DIPA.

IMO my Master Exploder was better which only clocks in at a theoretical 200 or so IBUs, but I am careful with the mash temps and managing the fermentation so I get it to finish very dry considering the OG, which helps bring out the hops better IMO.

I doubt I could tell the difference between 1000 and 2500 so unless I get some at a tasting or something like that I won't go out of my way to sample it.

The 1000IBU Mikkeller was indeed good. I say take it in the likely-lighthearted manner in which it was intended, and judge it on the merits if you are so inclined and able to give it a taste.

This reminded me of an article I read about Deschutes Hop Henge awhile back in regards to the discrepancy of calculated vs actual IBUs...

http://blog.oregonlive.com/thebeerhere/2009/02/two_batches_of_hop_henge_to_tr.html

The gist of it is that they created a batch of beer that on paper calculated out to 243 IBU. Their lab measured a sample in the fermenter and it was 117. After removing the dry hops and bottling they ended up with 87 in the finished product. There definitely seems to be a point of severely diminishing returns for getting actual IBUs into the beer...
