I'm brewing a high gravity stout here in about 4 days. I have done a little research and having a strong yeast to pitch seems to be the ticket. I have been advised to do a two step starter. Since I was planning on doing a 48hr starter should I start today decant in 48 hours and add another DME solution and wait another 48 hours (totaling 96 hours)?

I'm no expert on yeast starters, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but that seems like a good idea. Make a starter, when its ready to pitch, make another starter with the healthy yeast. I wouldn't use a 1000ml flask for this, make sure you have a larger vessel and enough boiled extract to get the nutrients and room it needs. High population and health are key for larger abv beers.

That's right. The process is make a yeast starter once it's settled a bit decant the spend liquid and then pitch the new slurry into a new solution of water and DME. Each should go for 2-3 days. And using a stir plate would only make it better.

Use this site to calculate how much yeast you need, have, and can produce.

Just put it in as a two step starter. Or, you may find that you don't even need two steps. Good luck
