UK brands: Baird's and Thomas Fawcett

BEST 2 row is Maris Otter IMO

Rhar is cheap and the plant is in my state so I like that it's local.

What you intend to brew should dictate the decision of base malt. I prefer GW and Rahr over Briess for domestic grain. For UK styles I'm a fan of Hugh Baird, Fawcett, Crisp, Warminster, or Simpson's. Hugh Baird and Fawcett make good darker malts, and I prefer Simpson's or Crisp for crystal.

I've been satisfied with the following:

Thomas Fawcett
Muntons
Great Western
Malteurop
Crisp

...and to a lesser extent Rahr

I can easily walk into a supermarket and tell you what tomatoes are better, what chicken is of higher quality, what pasta will put a smile on your face, etc. - I was just wondering if quality was representative of price in the case of malt... Or if certain other factors come into play.

Locate a HBC that does group buys. Or set up a group grain buy for your area. Its pretty easy to get the UK malts that way. At least it has been in my experience.

I'm a fan of Great Western Pale Ale Malt as a base grain

For what its worth, I usually buy grains malted by Gambrinus in bulk. Its a small maltster in Canada.
