What do y'all think the best way to split a vial is? I will be brewing the same beer within a day or two of each other, trying to get my all-grain methods down. I thought I would pour half the vial into each starter container, then keep stepping up. Would it be better to make a big starter, then pitch half, step back up?

BTW- it's WL 320 HEFE Yeast

I think I'd make a BIG starter, then use 1/2 for each batch.
The problem with using 1/2 of the tube for each starter is the relatively low amount of bugs in the sample. Your tube is the right size for a starter...but how big? If it's HUGE, I say give it some extra time.

I think I'd make a BIG starter, then use 1/2 for each batch. .

I start 2 days before brew day. My vial will go into a 1 liter erlenmyer flask of cooled wort (1/2 cup DME and 1 pint of water boiled 10 minutes). The next day, that gets poured into a 2 liter erlenmyer flask of cooled wort (1 cup DME and 1 liter of water).

The next day (brew day), I swirl the 2 liter flask really well and split it between two 5 gallon batches. Works like a charm every time.

Make 2 starters from the same vial. I always do that with smack packs. Depending upon how big the batch is, I make at least 1 starter, more than likely 2+.
