I made a sweetwater IPA clone about 3 months ago or so. I attempted to wash the yeast for the first time. I ended up with about 1/2"-3/4" of sludge on the bottom of my mason jar. About 1/4 of it was yeast (white on top), and the rest sludge. I'm guessing that will be okay. I'll try to leave some sludge behind.
I'm doing a Stone self righteous clone this weekend and am going to reuse this yeast. I'm sure I need to make a starter since the beer is 1.082 OG. How big of a starter should I make. Do you guys just guess? There is really no way of knowing how much yeast and how viable it is is there? I was thinking a 1.5-2 liter starter on a stir plate. Is that overkill? I may use the yeast from 2 jars to make sure I have enough healthy yeast.
