My Citra Cascade Pale Ale received a 38 for a final assigned score!! I took 1st place in American Ales out of 10 different beers. Even more surprising, I took 3rd place overall in the competition out of 70 some beers. This was my first competition that I have entered, and went really well. My beer was scored by two judges, one BJCP grand master and one non certified judge. I received a 36 from both. The grand master gave me very good advice. My scores are 8/12 aroma, 3/3 appearance, 15/20 flavor, 3/5 mouth feel, and 7/10 overall impression. He wrote that some off flavors were present, but he noted that it was note due to process problems. It seems I have an issue with the water that I am using. I am using a mineral water with too much carbonate. He suggested I use distilled water or reverse osmosis water. For all those who are curios as to why I should use distilled water, I am brewing with extracts. As far a scores go, how well did I do? Since this is my first competition, I really am not sure what to think of this score. I am assuming it is good because I placed. Also, is 70 some beers pretty small for a competition?

I just got my score sheets back from a buddy at work who is a BJCP judge. I have been doing AG BIAB for about 6 months and wanted some straight forward feeedback. I gave him a Dark English Mild and a Cream Ale. Scored 33 on each.

Mild: Aroma 7/12, Appearance 3/3, Flavor 13/20, Mouthfeel 2/5; Overall 8/10 = 33pts

Cream Ale: Aroma 8/12, Appearance 3/3, Flavor 10/20, Mouthfeel 5/5; Overall 7/10 = 33pts

So your scores are very good - I'm happy with what I received and it points out some flaws in my process. Both were slightly over carbonated (something I don't worry about much usually). I need to dial in my mash temps and have better ferm temp control, pay attention to yeast strains, etc.

Congrats - you are obviously on the right track.

Cheers!
