So, I've been brewing for 13+ years and have only brewed one IPA... ever. Only reason I brewed it was I "had" to clean out all my hop remnants from the freezer.

Anyways, I got a pound of 007 Idaho experimental from Nikobrew and want to brew a 007 beer.

7lbs simpsons golden promise
7lbs briess 2 row
.7 lbs carafa 1 337L

Srm 7L
O.G. 1.077
Expected F.G. 1.023
7.7%abv
72% efficiency

7oz 007 Idaho experimental

1oz at 60
2oz at 20
1oz at 5
1.77 at 1
1.33 dry hop at 7 days

77 ibus

Wlp 007

Any thoughts? Looks good to me but not sure. Obvious gimmic beer but maybe it'll taste good too

I did a "gimmick" SMASH (MO & Centennial) beer for my 50th birthday

OG was 1.050, IBU were 50, SRM was 5.0 and ABV% was 5.0

notes are showing I used WLP041, probably because 050 is their TN Whiskey strain and I don't think 051 was an option at the time

my only question would be why use GP AND 2-row? why not one or the other?

otherwise, make that beer

I personally would get as much bittering bang for the buck at 60 minutes, skip the intermediate additions, then move an ounce or 2 to flameout/whirlpool, and the rest in dry hop. That's just my personal preference. It's worked very well for me.

Also, the FG seems high for an IPA, and using WLP007. I'd mash at a temp that will get your FG around 1.012-1.018 if possible.

Just my 0.02.

I love this hop. I opened a brewery this last year and we use 007 hops in two of our beers. One is a brown IPA (it is balanced and apsolutely amazing. The apricot/black tea from the 007 meshes well with the chocolate malts. If you want I could shrink the recipe for you.

We also use the hop in an american wheat that we hop burst and pair it with el dorado.

I really like this hop. It is a toss up and depending on the day I like it or el dorado. Any questions about the hop let me know.

Thank you for that. I'd love to see the recipe. I'd be happy with percentages and hop schedule. Thank you again.

Gp because it's "golden" and two row because it's less sweet plus the gimmic factor of 7lbs. With F.G. as high as it was calculated, I didn't want to have a super sweet malt shake beer!

Ya, I may play around with the hop schedule. I threw this together in the 10 min before I clocked in this morning. I was thinking the F.G being as high as it is would compliment the high ibu's but maybe not!?!? Once again, only my second IPA. I tend towards Belgians, wits, stouts, ambers and the like. Thank you for the input.

This is not a palate trasher and we do call this a Texas Brown Ale (another name for the Brown IPA), hops are forward but balanced by the malt. Think of this as a hoppy brown ale and not a hoppy IPA.

OG: 1.064
FG: 1.016
IBU: 45
SRM: 17

78.24% 2-Row
12.09% Vienna
2.42% Caramel 120 L
2.42% Chocolate Malt
4.84% Dextrapils
16 IBU of Bittering hops @ 60 minutes
1 oz per 5 gallons @ 15 minutes of 007
1 oz per 5 gallons @ 5 Minutes of 007
1 oz per 5 gallons of dry hopping
US-05 for yeast

Mash at 154 for 60 minutes.

20 Days total in primary and we just add the hops to the primary for dry hopping.
Then we cold crash/carbonate/keg

Ok great. Thank you. Are you in Longview Texas? Can I buy your beer here in San Antonio? How far from San Antonio are you?

Yes we are. Currently we are located and distribute only to longview. We are small and just opened last year, but if you find yourself up this way let me know. It does take about 6 hours to get here. Although, I am willing to open the brewery even when we aren't open for a fellow homebrewer.

I decided to change the recipe a little bit.

7lbs simpsons golden promise
7lbs briess gold pils Vienna
12oz honey malt

Once again, this will bring to 1.077
7 srm

Mash at 153 60min and mash out at 168 10 min.

Wlp 007
Should bring it to 1.019
7.71%abv

Hops schedule all Idaho experimental 007 aka the golden hop.

1oz at 60
1oz at 19
3oz at 5
2oz at 1

7oz total
77ibu

Wlp 007 at 65f for 10 days or until F.G. Achieved.

What's the verdict? If there is no objections to this, this is what I'll brew.

Also, gonna start with R.O.
Add 7g CaSO4
2g CaCL2
2g MgSO4
1g NaCL

Should get me to
Calcium 72ppm
Magnesium 7ppm
Sulfate 155ppm
Sodium 13ppm
Chloride 52ppm

Anything wrong with that water profile?

Looks good. The only thing I would change would be to change your 60 minute addition to a different/cheaper hop as it will be burning off almost all of the flavor/aroma anyways.

Looks good, I'd like to try this hop! Thanks for posting!
