    Fullers 1845

Does anyone have a recipe for this nectar of the gods? I had a bottle last weekend and fell in love with it. I've got to make a batch. Any help is appreciated.

    Kreusen with a stir plate?

I'm doing my first stir-plate starter and I was wondering if I should expect some kreusen as with a normal non stir plate kind. Being as it's constantly stirred it might destroy it, and as it's covered with foil instead of an airlock I can't really tell if anything is going on so far. Thanks.

    Electric Hot Liquor Tank?

I was at the hardware store yesterday and I saw this fitting for a hot water tank, it was a flange that bolts to the tank, with a gasket, that allows you to screw an electric heating element into it and it got me to thinking. What if I cut a hole in the side of a keggle and attached that to the...

    Best Maris Otter?

I'm going to get together an order to Mid Country and was wondering if anyone can give opinions on the best Maris Otter malt they carry. I thought this had been discussed in another thread but I couldn't find it when searching for 'maris otter'. Also can anyone give me a read on pilsen malt...

Large batches = longer fermentation times?

I've got 11 gallons of ordinary bitter out fermenting right now. Usually by this point (day 5) I'm added gelatin to the primary to settle out for kegging in 2 days but I'm still getting airlock activity and was wondering if larger batches take longer to ferment out. Should I give it a few more...

BLC and Star San in keg lines

I have been keeping star san in my fluid lines when I'm not actively pulling pints on the assumption it would keep the lines from becoming funky. After about 6 weeks I've noticed the lines started turning a bit yellowish, as if there was beer in there that wasn't getting washed out. I ran some...

    Fermenting in a sanke keg

Yeah yeah everyone says they're hard to clean. I built a long rod that goes down in there with some holes drilled in the end that attaches to a hose to clean it well. Filled it with 15 gallons of PBW, sanitized it with star-san. I pulled the spear from the bung and put the bung back in and #7...

    10 Gallon Batches @#$()*

So I found a decommed keg to use as a boil pot, and I have the fermenter question taken care of, and I got a huge wort chiller and my all grain tuns are set up for 10 gallon batches but my burner stand... not so much. I put the keg on it and put 13 gallons of water in it and it seemed okay, I...

Fermenting 6 gallons in a 14 gallon fermenter? Problems?

I am thinking of picking up one of those 14 gallon fermenators because I want to make some 10 gallon batches, but occasionally want to still make some smaller 5 gallon batches. Is it okay to ferment a smaller batch in one of those - or would all the extra headspace be a problem? Thanks.

    Hiyaaaa!! Efficiency!

I brewed today, did some new things, one of which was motorizing my corona mill. I hit 82% efficiency. Holy @%!!! My bitter is going to be a little... extra. I threw in some extra hops to balance it out. Can't wait to see how this one turns out. I was expecting about 68 or 70% efficiency.

Adding final runnings after the boil has started

I can barely start a boil large enough to get enough wort in the fermenter so that when I siphon into a keg I can leave the gunk on the bottom. Can I fill the boil pot with runnings and then take the little bit of last runnings in another container and then add those to the boil once some of it...

    Keeping up with consumption

I'm barely keeping my head above water now. I can generally pull off one batch per week and as soon as it's fermented and carbonated we're drinking it. Kegging, which is awesome, turns out to not be so awesome because I'm pulling imperial pints instead of 12 oz bottles. Big difference in the...

    Sparge temps?

So I've got this fancy setup with a sort of sprinkler head for the sparge and 'they' say to sparge at 168-170 deg so that's what I've got up in the sparge water tank. However, once it runs down the line and sprinkles through the air it's not really that hot. The thermometer in my mash tun that...

    Starsan in beer lines

I've kept a keg full of starsan out next to my kegerator for the last couple of weeks. When we're not actively pulling pints I tap the starsan keg to clean the lines out and keep them infection free. This is probably overkill, right? I know BLC is better for cleaning beer lines but I was...

Okay, I can FINALLY post in here! - 1st all grain

First all grain batch today, an ordinary bitter. My feet hurt so bad I can't concentrate to type! Never do a 7 hour brew session in flipflops. Estimated OG 1.038, actual 1.041 0.50 lb Rice Hulls (0.0 SRM) Adjunct 6.3 % 6.00 lb Pale Malt...

    Pouring a stout properly?

I've got a beer that I've carbonated, in the keg, 42 deg @ 10 psi, it's an irish ale. I'm pouring it through a stout tap @ 30psi on beer gas and I get a lot of foam. After 3 minutes I guess the glass is still 1/4 foam, more than I'm used to at the pub with glasses of guinness. Anyone have any...

    Kegerator - finally!

I finally got all the parts and put my kegerator together. The great thing about this fridge is all the coils are on the back so I didn't have to worry about drilling through one. I used a holesaw to cut the holes. It was pretty easy to do. The keg inside is full of irish ale that should be...

Midwest Supplies - won't order from them again (I TAKE IT BACK!)

I admit, I could be overreacting, I have this personality flaw that is violently allergic to stupid when encountered. I ordered a stainless false bottom from Midwest because the plastic one I have is warped. It arrived today and had the labels affixed by packing tape. Did you guys know that...
