    Electrical Help for Stir Plate

10k Ohm is probably way too much resistance. I doubt that you can get a useable adjustment range with that. To get an approximate value, you can divide the fan's rated voltage by the rated current. In my case 12 V/120 mA = 100 ohms. A potentiometer with the same value, 100 ohms, would give...

Silicone gasket on the inside or outside of a weldless fitting

Normally, you would want the pressure inside the vessel to aid in creating a seal. This would indicate placement of the gasket on the inside. However, in this case we are only dealing with about 1 psig (p=h*0.434*SG) inside the typical kettle. Probably not enough to have much of an effect...

Best Heating Method Inside Small Chest Freezer

I just bought one of these for this winter: http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-MyHeat-Personal-Ceramic-Heater/dp/B003XDTWN2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1318615541&sr=8-1

    Cheap and easy aeration gadget

I have been using one of these made from a section of copper tubing and it works great. FWIW, I cut a bunch of copper sections and tried various configurations: crimped tube, straight tube, multiple holes, different size holes, different hole locations. What ended up working best for me was a...

    Steeping Malts

I have been confused about this too. The two AHS extract kits I have brewed included base malts in the steeping grains. My understanding is that if you are steeping at 155 with base malts then you would technically be doing a partial mash. Is this correct?

    1.066 and single smack pack

I brewed my third batch on Friday. It is a milk stout with OG 1.066. I was planning to use dry American ale yeast but the LHBS was out so I purchased a wyeast smack pack. I knew these were designed to be pitched in 5 gallons so I did not make a starter. After I pitched I noticed that the...

    BIAB and Partial Mash Questions

Currently I am using a turkey fryer to do full boil extract recipes. I am interested in trying a partial mash or all grain BIAB but I have a few questions: all grain BIAB: I don't believe my 30qt kettle is large enough to hold the full boil volume plus the grain bag. Is it possible to mash...

Looking for a couple of clones

Two of my favorite IPA's are Rock Bottom's Hop Bomb and Widmer's X-114. Does anyone have a clone recipe for either of these, or a proven recipe that uses Citra hops? Extract or partial mash please. I am wanting something with a big grapefruit aroma and flavor.

    First Immersion Chiller

I used an 8" quick tube also. It worked great. I taped one end to the tube to get started. Having an extra set of hands helps a lot too.

    First brew tomorrow! Need help!

Look here for the math involved: http://www.howtobrew.com/section1/chapter5-5.html You need to know your target IBU, then look up the hop utilization for your boil time and expected gravity. From there you can solve for the AAU's which (based on your hop's AA percentage) will tell you how...

Just scored a nice fermentation chamber

I think the TS is what most people order for cooling. The TSS2 does both cooling and heating for only a few dollars more. You will need a new probe. The TS comes with a probe. If you go with the TSS2 you will need to order a probe ($6 I think)

How should I use my glass carboy?

I own a 6.5 gallon bucket and a 6.5 gallon carboy for fermentation. I brewed my first batch last weekend and placed it in the bucket to ferment. I would like to get a second batch going before the first is finished. Should I 1. Transfer the first batch from the bucket to the carboy after...

    First Brew Questions

I finished my first brew today. I brewed the extract version of the AHS Fat Tire Clone. I did a full boil and adjusted the hop amounts accordingly. I started with just over 6 gallons and finished with exactly 5 gallons in my ale pail according to the markings on the side (I forgot to verify...

    Powering down the sump pump

A valve on the output is the standard way to do it. A V-ball or globe valve will give you more precise control than a normal ball valve. If you are running at very low flow rates, it may be a good idea to put in a recirculation line to protect the pump.
