    Yeast Starter Necessary

I preparing to brew last weekend and started my Wyeast smack pack. Found out later I couldn't brew so I put the smacked but unopened yeast back into the refridgerator. I'm going to brew on Sunday now and need to know if I need to do anything special to prepare the yeast. I was considering a...

Do people top up their secondary to reduce head space? Made five gallons of Barleywine and ended up with about 4.5 gallons in secondary. Thanks. \Don

What I did for beer today

Drank four bottles of homebrew that were taking up space in my fridge, designed labels for bottles of homebrew I'm giving to a friend in honor of his promotion, and listened to my Bavarian Hefeweisen happily ferment. Don

Using RO/DI Water for All Grain

Living rural, I have well water at home. I've only brewed extract kits so far and have bought spring water to brew with. My water tastes fine to me but I am thinking about switching to All-Grain and don't like the thought of buying spring water at $.88 a gallon. I have a RO/DI filter system I...

    Am I the only loser....

Actually enjoyed sitting home with my wife and 5 month old pup. Bottled wine for my wife, a batch of Breakfast Stout for me and drank a couple craft beers, some home brew, and a bottle of my mead that now that it's seven months old, doesn't taste like turpintine anymore. Couldn't think of many...

First Yeast Starter - MrMalty Results

:confused:I'm going to brew a Barleywine on New Years. It has a target OG of 1.084. I used MrMalty with the data of: Fermentation Type: Ale OG: 1.084 Volume: 5gal Production Date: 19 Dec 11 Based on this input, it's telling me to make 1.24 quarts of starter using 2 vials (I'm...

    Steeping Specialty Grains

I finished brewing a Oatmeal Stout extract kit and the directions on it said to steep the specialty grains for 30 minutes or until reaching 170 degrees. Being concerned about the length of time steeping (could be 5 minutes if the water heats up quickly) I called and asked. I was told that the...

    First Attempt at Washing Yeast

Attempted to wash yeast for the first time following Bernie Brewers sticky. I harvested it down to a 1 pint canning jar and I ended up with about 3/16" of yeast sitting on 3/4" of trub. Is this too much trub for it to sit on and will it affect the flavor of my next batch when I use it? Thanks...

Mead - Using plastic bucket for secondary vessel

Is there a problem using a plastic five gallon bucket (from a bakery) as a secondary vessel for bulk aging and clarifying Mead? I hate the idea of tying up my only carboy for months while aging. Thanks. Don

    ok um

I went into their store and picked up the two kits I wanted and asked them if they'd crush the grains for me. They said sure, but there's no grains in those kits. I guess I should have looked first. And I'm hoping these simple kits turn out good.

    Splitting batches into 2 fermentors

Is it advisable to split a 5 gal batch into two 5 gal fementors (2 1/2 gallons each)? I have a couple of buckets that hold exactly 5 gallons each that I was interested in splitting a batch of stout into and pitching a packet of Safale -04 into each? Will this work or do you think there'd be...
