    Sassafras/sarsaparilla root beer recipe?

I've purchased from herbco.com before. They have cut and sifted and powder. Cut and sifted is easier to use, but it's very seasonal. It says they are out of stock right now and don't expect any in until 11/21. $22per 4oz or $55/lb. The same was true last time I ordered, so I bought the powder...

    Canning

Thanks for the reply. I think you're right, and that's what I was afraid of. When I was in college, we did a fundraiser for the food science club around Valentine's day where we sold canned Valentines. You bring whatever you can fit in either a #10 can or standard grocery store canned veggies...

    Canning

Hey everyone, it's been a while since I've been here, been busy with house projects. So I see there's a lot more options for canning that there weren't a couple of years ago. I want to try it out, but I don't want to jump lay out several hundred dollars for a seamer. I see a couple hand...

What I did for beer today

I made a draft flange because I really don't like the black plastic ones: Needs some sanding, but seems to be a pretty good fit. Could be thinner, though.

    Utah Vintage Coleman Jockey Box

Hmmm... Good question. It's been awhile since I've used it, so I can't say for sure what the best range is. If I remember right I was running about 25-30psi and the pour wasn't too bad (as in not too forceful as is the usual problem with soda), but that was because it was carbonated at 35-40psi...

    Utah Vintage Coleman Jockey Box

I have for sale a vintage Coleman cooler (1980) turned jockey Box. Includes 2 Perlick stainless faucets with stainless shanks, 2 circuit cold plate and all the fittings to connect to ball lock kegs. I bought these faucets/shanks for soda, but they don't seem to have any lingering root beer...

    The I-Don't-Know-What-I'm-Doing Bar Build

So it's been a while, progress has been slow but fairly steady. I attached the bar to the wall with some cabinet mounting screws and used the same screws to attach to some 2x8's that I liquid nails'ed to the tile floor. This beast is solid, now! I'm going to have to go in and fix all my pictures...

Help needed wiring up thermostat please?

Nice, glad you got it sorted out. Always helps to have friends with skills like that. It's funny, though, being a cheapskate is the exact reason I bought the stc. Maybe they're not as cheap as they used to be or shipping to Middle Earth is just ridiculously expensive. I used it to replace a...

Help needed wiring up thermostat please?

Your light bulb would be the box labeled 6(2) A if I'm not mistaken. Though we would need some more information on how this is supposed to trigger. It looks like there is a secondary option, but is that for cooling, or is that a second heater? Also, you have the wires there, do you know what...

    Sassafras/sarsaparilla root beer recipe?

I think it's more likely that honey would have been used over cane sugar for availability rather than for health benefits. I know that root beer recipes circa 1820s in upstate New York were likely to include Maple sugar, not because of flavor but because there are so many trees up there. I'm...

    Preserving soda without preservatives?

If you're planning on selling it, talk to your local health department or whoever will be inspecting your setup or giving you a license, so you know what they expect for food safety, proof of insurance, and so on. That way you don't get to the point where you're ready to sell product and get...

    The I-Don't-Know-What-I'm-Doing Bar Build

I was fortunate enough to find a classifieds listing that said "wet bar - $75". So I jumped on that! It included 3 upper cabinets which held a bottle and wine glass rack, 3 base cabinets with a composite countertop and a postage stamp size sink. I had asked the dimensions and they said it was...

    The I-Don't-Know-What-I'm-Doing Bar Build

Making some slow progress. Did some alchemy and turned this PVC trim into wood. Ok, so it wasn't alchemy. I surrendered my man card for a Pinterest account and came across it there. It passes a fairly close inspection and is convincing enough. I guess we'll see how durable it is. FYI aniline...

    My 1st Soda tonight.

Any sulfur flavor? In my experience champagne yeast doesn't do too well in red grape juice without a yeast nutrient to avoid off flavors. Premiere Cuvee does a little better, but still sees benefit from the nutrient.

Need help with a trash find

Apparently Houston Fearless is a defense contractor, so whatever this was is likely classified. Remember that episode of Blacklist where the guy turned his victims into liquid in an acid bath and washed them down the drain? Yeah, it's probably a military grade version of that. Enjoy. Or a...

    Craigslist Chest Freezer Not Working

So this thing has a digital temp control, but what is that set at? If you left it on overnight and the temp control wasn't set right, it might have kicked off without you noticing. Also, you do want to give it enough time to cool properly. 10cf of empty space is a lot to bring down to temp...

    truck project for home brewers

I didn't know 1st Gen Tacomas could hold a truck bed camper. I too was confused at the usefulness of gray water for Homebrew.

    The I-Don't-Know-What-I'm-Doing Bar Build

Some shading and a bit more darkening of the main portion. It took a couple drops of dye in the minwax, which worked nicely. It's starting to look a bit more like a piece of furniture now: Next up is spiffing up and coloring the corbels, working on the trim and then on to the...

    The I-Don't-Know-What-I'm-Doing Bar Build

I did some mock ups for colors in GIMP and decided the best thing to do would be to darken the orange a bit more and do a deep red for the squares. Oh, that's really red. And it makes the orange more orange. Still a few steps to go yet, so I'm not quite panicking.

    The I-Don't-Know-What-I'm-Doing Bar Build

Finally there is some update worthy progress. I top coated the dye with some minwax wood finish. This worked so much better on the test piece than the actual bar because the test piece was done immediately after the dye which was done immediately after the shellac, so the stain filled the grain...
