    Help with hop choice

So I am going to be making an American Pale Ale / IPA this weekend out of some leftovers I have lying around. Grain bill is probably going to be: 10# 2 Row 1# Crystal 60 0.5# Flaked Red Wheat 0.5# Flaked Rye I was initially going to use just Simcoe and Warrior but not sure if that...

    My beer tastes crap :(

It will probably improve with time. How long did you leave it before tasting?

So, just finished me first batch...

RDWHAHB. Congrats on the first batch. Everything you listed is extremely unlikely to cause problems. A bit too much trub may lead to a less than clear beer, but shouldn't really affect the taste. Chill out and "enjoy" the wait for your first beer.

    Normal starter?

Thanks for the input. I have decided to just use it. The brown stuff disappeared about an hour after I took the pictures and it smells and tastes fine.

    Normal starter?

I am using some recycled yeast and have kind of a brown spot in the middle which I haven't seem before. Is this normal? Trying to decide if I should use it or not.

What would you make with this grain bill?

Thanks for the input. I was planning on a low mash temp to maintain as dry a finish as possible and your IBU suggestion is right where I plan to be. I know this wont make a leffe clone, but it will be a belgian style ale of a similar type and I am fine with that. My initial plan (I put...

    Not exactly a recipe, but....

I just tried mixing edworts apfelwein with some White House honey ale, about 50/50. Maybe I am not the first person to try this and maybe this thread is in the wrong place (wasn't sure where to put it) but I recommend it. You end up with a nice malty "cider" which has a beer taste but a tart...

What would you make with this grain bill?

You have echoed what I was thinking. I was considering turning this into sort of a Leffe style beer by adding some Hersbrucker and Saaz and using some recycled Trappist High Gravity Yeast. My concern was the crystal malt perhaps not being quite suitable for a belgian ale but I guess I will...

What would you make with this grain bill?

So I have the following grains all crushed and mixed together: 9lbs Pilsner 0.5lbs Crystal 10L 0.5lbs Aromatic 0.5lbs Biscuit I have an idea what I could make with this but would like to get some thoughts from you guys. What hops and yeast would you add to this, and what style of...

Will this work to crush my grains?

I have used a total piece of crap blender to crush grains before and it worked fine. Blend tec are very high quality so it will do the job easily and will not get wrecked at all. I would set it for a coarse setting and just pulse it in very short bursts. You don't want flour.

Convert Dry Stout to milk stout?

Thanks for the tip. I will be reusing some washed wlp002 for this one. I have read about the cold steep method and will definitely try it next time when the grains aren't all mixed together.

Convert Dry Stout to milk stout?

So I am finally about to make this recipe this weekend and I realized I forgot to get the crystal 80. I have crystal 60. Would that do the job? Should I use a bit more of it?

    Yet another water help request

OK. Sorry. Too many homebrews. Didn't notice that you have tried the link I gave you already. If you need Magnesium, I think that is what Epsom salts provide and you should be able to get them from a local pharmacy.

    Yet another water help request

12 grams gypsum, 4 grams calcium chloride, 4 grams epsom salts, 4 grams baking soda. I am no expert, but this is what I will be adding to my distilled water tomorrow to brew an IPA. I have done this before and been just fine. Check this out: http://www.ezwatercalculator.com/

Clarity-Ferm, Gluten Testing, and Gluten Sensitivity

Lack of reaction probably means something though right? My wife eats a tiny bit of bread by mistake and has a clear reaction. All my beer is made with clarity ferm and she has zero noticeable reaction to it.

Can I use a corny keg as a secondary for lagers?

Pretty sure a keg for secondary is just fine, especially as many people go straight from primary to keg anyway. Just make sure to purge the oxygen.

Finally found a decent way to display the menu

Bad chalkboard writing disclaimer*** Went to ikea and found a cheap frame. Coated the included chipboard backing with chalkboard paint and that was it. Just thought I would post as it took a while figuring out how to easily do this and have it look ok.

    Gusher Experience

Not much to add here, but I was having insane gusher problems and I think I did all the same research you have been doing as I came to many similar conclusions. I recently started kegging, thus eliminating the whole bottling process. Ever since I did that I have been making good beer. Moving to...

Blending with a counter pressure bottle filler?

I don't know the answer but what are you blending? 2 different beers?

    Buying new vs used kegs?

I think most people favor ball locks due to the smaller diameter. I know I did.
