    Need a new yeast

I emailed them and this is what they said. Sam (Mangrove Jack's) Aug 1, 04:24 BST Good day Jonny, The best replacement would be M15 Empire Ale yeast – it is lower attenuating than most other strains, so ideal for full bodied and slightly sweeter stouts and porters, along with brown ales...

    Need a new yeast

Looking for some recommendations on a replacement for the Mangrove M03 New Castle yeast. This was used in all my Stouts and Porters but seeing how it is no longer produced I need something similar. I have used Nottingham, s-04, Windsor, London ESB and none of these were as good as the M03. Any...

    Fly sparge - question

Sorry it took me a few days to get back here. No I'm sparging with 170 water not 152 but yes skipping raising the temp. Thinning the mash was 100% screwing up my efficiency.

    Fly sparge - question

I know it has been a few weeks since you posted but wanted to tell you I had the same issue early on. I have always fly sparged with a cheap'o three tier system. I mash at 1.25 qts/lb. and always did a mashout step (added x gallons of boiling water to hit 168). My numbers were always all over...

Key factors in producing high gravity (1.100+) worts ?

SG was 1.112 and got %74 efficiency. Only at dough in and no. That's not true. Can be debated all day but I know for a fact some well know brewers often mash at 160. I mean I put the numbers in beer smith for my 10 gallon system and my efficiency was spot on. Right, I no longer raise mash temp...

    Confused on what to buy...

I have a budget set up when I say budget, I mean budget. The most expensive piece is my pot and that cost me a whopping $125 from Agri Supply. It is 20 gallons so a ten gallon brew is easy. I have a cheap 3 tier set up, Coleman (54qt.I think) rectangular cooler (like $50), homemade manifold...

Key factors in producing high gravity (1.100+) worts ?

I have only made a few high gravity beers but will tell you what worked for me. I used the same mash thickness (1.5 quarts water per lb.) but did do a 3 hour mash every time. I mashed a little higher (156-158) and collected more volume (8.5 gallons) for the longer boil (90-120 min). I used my 10...

Just wait it out (the story of keeping hope on a bad brew)

Date on yeast was less then a month old. I know I was pushing the limits without a starter but it still should have done something, anything within the first week and a half. Believe me I know about starters but asking the guys in the shop they have used this yeast with great results without...

Just wait it out (the story of keeping hope on a bad brew)

No yeast starter and about a week and a half with no fermentation. This is the yeast I used and figured a starter would not be necessary. https://www.theyeastbay.com/brewers-yeast-products/vermont-ale

Just wait it out (the story of keeping hope on a bad brew)

I'm not great at telling stories but will try to make this interesting so maybe others can learn and not give up hope to easily. Living in NC we get the hurricane scare just about every year and this year I decided to make the best of it. I collected about 20 gallons of fresh Hurricane Florence...

Weevil in grain - Dump or brew?

I too have brewed with them before but not to that degree. That is a ton of little critters for sure. I would dump and chalk it up to lesson learned. As a side note I had them in my Wheat once and it was stored in a sealed bucket.

    Spring Brews

I have 2 recipes that I really like in the spring and all summer long. A Citrus Wheat and a White IPA. Both are light (wheat) and have plenty of flavor. You doing 5 or 10 gallons?

today I was called a bad influence

I don't think it was that big of a deal and you handled it properly. I have never had anyone say anything to me about my beer brewing, but would let them know that my 11yr old and 8 yr old daughters help me brew on most days. Then I would have my daughters tell them the whole process from mash...

Fly Sparging question, my OG has been low the past 2 brews

That is what I think is happening. In essence I'm making the mash to thin and need to collect more of it and boil it down. It is easier to just not do a mash out which dilutes the wort. When I did a mash out I would just add the amount of 200 degree water to meet the 168 degrees. If I was...

    Adding Coffee to Smoked Porter

I make a coffee stout and use 24oz. of cold brewed fresh ground coffee at kegging. I would cold brew 12oz and add to taste.
